April has been an unusually strong month for metal, and I really have struggled to keep this list down to a manageable level. So much good music, so little time! Let’s have a look at what the metal world has given us this month then… Continue reading “Monthly Overview – the Best of April 2018”

Rotten Sound – Suffer to Abuse (Review)
Rotten Sound are a Finnish grindcore band and this is their latest EP.
Rotten Sound have always managed to marry up brutally aggressive music with decent songwriting and ferocious delivery. With this in mind, this latest EP offers 12 minutes of exactly this. It’s punishingly harsh, but not without a level of songcraft that’s absent from many grind bands who just tear loose and be done with it. Continue reading “Rotten Sound – Suffer to Abuse (Review)”
Brond – Graveyard Campfire (Review)
Brond are a Bulgarian rock band and this is their debut album.
Brond’s music mixes riff-focused modern rock and post-hardcore/rock, with progressive, stoner, and noise/math rock tendencies. Wow. Now there’s a description. Delivering eight tracks across almost 44 minutes of music, Graveyard Campfire is a well-realised and enjoyable release, despite my mangling together of various subgenres in an attempt to loosely categorise it. Wolvhammer – The Monuments of Ash & Bone (Review)
This is the fourth album from US black metallers Wolvhammer.
This is the much-awaited follow-up to 2014’s Clawing into Black Sun, which was one of my favourite releases of that year. To say I’ve been looking forward to this album is an understatement. Continue reading “Wolvhammer – The Monuments of Ash & Bone (Review)”
Axia – Pulverizer (Review)
Axia are a grindcore band from Portugal, and this is their debut album.
Okay, so rarely has a band’s album title been so aptly named. Axia play grind that just pulverises and destroys. Continue reading “Axia – Pulverizer (Review)”
Svalbard – It’s Hard to Have Hope (Review)
Svalbard are a crust/hardcore band from the UK and this is their second album.
It’s Hard to Have Hope is the sound of crust/hardcore bite and metallic aggression coming together to create 38 minutes of passionate music with a message. Continue reading “Svalbard – It’s Hard to Have Hope (Review)”
Body Void – I Live Inside a Burning House (Review)
Body Void are a doom band from the US and this is their second album.
I love bands that play horrible, nihilistic, pitch-black doom/sludge, and Body Void are my latest discovery in this vein. If you’re a fan of bands such as Primitive Man, Khanate, Bongripper, CHRCH, and Keeper, for example, then this is very definitely for you. Continue reading “Body Void – I Live Inside a Burning House (Review)”
Death Engine – Place Noire (Review)
Death Engine are a French hardcore band and this is their second album.
I like Death Engine. Like, a lot. Mud was a massively enjoyable album of multifaceted, nuanced hardcore, showing a breadth of delivery and depth of substance that’s extremely rare to encounter outside of the mighty Converge. This should not be taken to mean that Death Engine sound like Converge, however. Continue reading “Death Engine – Place Noire (Review)”
Whoresnation – Mephitism (Review)
Whoresnation are a grindcore band from France and this is their second album.
Featuring 20 tracks in 20 minutes, you know this is going to be a savage listen. As soon as you press play, the onslaught begins. Continue reading “Whoresnation – Mephitism (Review)”
The Noble – Abolitionism (Review)
This is the latest EP from The Noble, a hardcore band from the US.
I don’t often get to listen to much belligerent hardcore these days, so it’s great when I cross paths with something as heavy and uncompromising as Abolitionism. Continue reading “The Noble – Abolitionism (Review)”
