Forged in Black – Descent of the Serpent (Review)

Forged in Black - Descent of the SerpentForged in Black are a UK heavy metal band and this is their second album.

Featuring 48 minutes of material, Descent of the Serpent is well-crafted heavy metal with wide scope. Some elements of thrash are mixed in, for example. Also, occasionally the songs veer into classic doom metal territories in their more atmospheric moments, or sometimes adopt a power metal stance of epic force. Whatever they do this is pure heavy metal goodness all the way. Continue reading “Forged in Black – Descent of the Serpent (Review)”

Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard – Yn Ol I Annwn (Review)

Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard - Yn Ol I AnnwnThis is the third album from the impressively named Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard, a doom metal band from the UK.

I really enjoyed the band’s striking 2016 debut record Y Proffwyd Dwyll, which saw the band offer up an intoxicating blend of psychedelic sludge/doom metal. In 2018 they unleashed a mammoth, (ahem), split with Slomatics called Totems, which Continue reading “Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard – Yn Ol I Annwn (Review)”

Wolf Counsel – Destination Void (Review)

wolf counsel - destination voidThis is the fourth album from Swiss doom metal band Wolf Counsel.

The promo blurb states that this album is for fans of Cathedral, Candlemass, Trouble, and Solitude Aeturnus, and that’s a fair assessment. Continue reading “Wolf Counsel – Destination Void (Review)”

Abyssic – High the Memory (Review)

abyssic - high the memoryThis is the second album from Norwegian symphonic death/doom band Abyssic.

Primitive Man/Hell – Split (Review)

primitive man hell - splitThis is a split between two US doom outfits, Primitive Man and Hell.

My love for and enjoyment of Primitive Man will be familiar to readers of this site. Suffice to say that I consider them to be one of the best purveyors of ugly, apocalyptic sludge/doom that there is. Continue reading “Primitive Man/Hell – Split (Review)”

Monolithe – From Equinox to Solstice – Live at Beltane (Review)

monolithe - from equinox to solstice - live at beltaneMonolithe are a French doom metal band and this is a live recording of a private show on May 6th, 2018 at les Feux de Beltane in Brittany, France.

I’m not really one for live albums, (although I certainly do enjoy them from time to time), but I’m a big Monolithe fan, so decided this was one definitely worth checking out. Continue reading “Monolithe – From Equinox to Solstice – Live at Beltane (Review)”

Illimitable Dolor/Promethean Misery – Split (Review)

Illimitable Dolor Promethean Misery - SplitIllimitable Dolor and Promethean Misery are both from Australia, and both play variants of doom metal.

This is my first experience of Illimitable Dolor, which is a shame, as they come highly recommended, (and also feature members of the very enjoyable funeral doom band The Slow Death), but I’ve never heard them before this. Here they offer us two tracks, clocking in at 26 minutes in total. Continue reading “Illimitable Dolor/Promethean Misery – Split (Review)”
