Mordbrand – Wilt (Review)

MordbrandMordbrand are a Swedish death metal band and this is their second album.

A firmly enjoyable display of Swedish death metal, Mordbrand’s debut album Imago played to my soft spot for the style, with the chainsaw riffs and macabre melodies Continue reading “Mordbrand – Wilt (Review)”

Interview with Sunless

Sunless Header

I like dissonant, avant-garde death metal as much as the next person, but Sunless’ debut album Urraca really does live in its own league. It manages to take everything I like about the style and somehow improve on it. The listener is assaulted by atypical riffs, dissonant melodies and progressive heaviness, all with an accessibility, (relatively speaking), that’s rare for this kind of thing. Floods – Floods (Review)

FloodsFloods are a US black metal band and this is their debut EP.

Floods play a mix of black, death and sludge metal. Which genre they are actually playing is up for debate, although I’d argue that black metal forms the largest part of their musical equation, so we’ll go with that. Continue reading “Floods – Floods (Review)”

Reaping Asmodeia – Impuritize (Review)

Reaping AsmodeiaThis is the second album from Reaping Asmodeia, a technical death metal band from the US.

I find it so easy to like this kind of thing. It’s hyper-modern, with withering technicality, hard-as-nails brutality and enough progressive depth to keep things interesting…Reaping Asmodeia have delivered a monster of an album. Continue reading “Reaping Asmodeia – Impuritize (Review)”

Woe – Hope Attrition (Review)

WoeThis is the fourth album by Woe, a black metal band from the US.

Here we have a black metal album that has a decidedly American flavour to it that includes some minor aspects of post-black metal, hardcore and a pinch of death metal.

The album is Continue reading “Woe – Hope Attrition (Review)”

Lantern – II: Morphosis (Review)

LanternLantern are a blackened death metal band from Finland and this is their second album.

Lantern positively reek of old-school death metal’s foul, atavistic stench, albeit one that’s been dipped in the grim waters of black metal’s malevolence. Death metal is the overriding style here, but there’s enough of a blackened influence to allow for it in the genre tag. Continue reading “Lantern – II: Morphosis (Review)”
