Culted – Nous (Review)

Culted - NousCulted are an international blackened doom band and this is their third album.

It has been many years since 2014’s Oblique to All Paths, although we were gifted with an EP in 2019 – Vespertina Synaxis – A Prayer for Union & EmptinessNous contains 64 minutes of new, apocalyptic material, which Continue reading “Culted – Nous (Review)”

Sow Discord – Quiet Earth (Review)

Sow Discord - Quiet EarthThis is debut album from Australian one-man doom/noise band Sow Discord.

Across this album the artist behind Sow Discord fuses industrial and noise influences into a doom-fuelled 45 minutes of dark apocalyptic atmospherics. He does this very capably, with a keen ear for texture and malevolent mood. He’s Continue reading “Sow Discord – Quiet Earth (Review)”

Sunnata – Burning in Heaven, Melting on Earth (Review)

Sunnata - Burning in Heaven, Melting on EarthSunnata are a Polish doom metal band and this is their fourth album.

Sunnata play a form of doom metal that has ritualistic elements, manifesting in a tendency for repetition and hypnotic grooves. Despite this, the band know how to write a good tune, surprisingly so really; some of Continue reading “Sunnata – Burning in Heaven, Melting on Earth (Review)”

Carcolh – The Life and Works of Death (Review)

Carcolh - The Life and Works of DeathCarcolh are a French doom metal band and this is their second album.

Carcolh’s approach to traditional doom metal is one that’s downbeat, heavy, and rich in feeling. The band hover somewhere between the old-school and the new, making the most of each of them to produce something that’s not entirely either, so should appeal to fans of both. The Body – I’ve Seen All I Need to See (Review)

The Body - I've Seen All I Need to SeeThis is the eighth album from US experimental sludge band The Body.

You never quite know what you’re going to get with The Body. I’ve Seen All I Need to See contains 38 minutes of experimental music that focuses on an exploration of distortion and of the live aspect of the band’s sound. This means Continue reading “The Body – I’ve Seen All I Need to See (Review)”

Emma Ruth Rundle & Thou – The Helm of Sorrow (Review)

Emma Ruth Rundle & Thou - The Helm of SorrowThis is a collaboration between post-rock/folk solo artist Emma Ruth Rundle and doom/sludge metallers Thou, both from the US.

This is the second collaboration between these two artists, although sadly I managed to miss out on the full album that the two released together last year. On the strength of The Helm of Sorrow, this is a real shame, as something special appears to have been created here. Continue reading “Emma Ruth Rundle & Thou – The Helm of Sorrow (Review)”

Dread Sovereign – Alchemical Warfare (Review)

Dread Sovereign - Alchemical WarfareThis is the third album from Irish doom metal band Dread Sovereign.

I really like Dread Sovereign’s work, (see 2014’s All Hell’s Martyrs and 2017 For Doom the Bell Tolls), so listening to Alchemical Warfare was a must. Across 52 minutes the band kick out some of their best jams, so trust me when I say that if you’re at all into this style then you should make Alchemical Warfare a priority.
