Pelican/Ni – Yes (Pink Room), Manchester – 13/08/25 (Live Review)

Pelican/Ni – Yes (Pink Room), Manchester – 13/08/25 (Live Review)

Pelican Ni Yes Manchester Header

Both Pelican and Ni are in the UK for ArcTanGent, (I’ll get there one day), so it’s a great opportunity to catch them doing their thing. I don’t know Ni at all, but I’ve been waiting to get the chance to see Pelican for over two decades (!), so am very excited.

Yes isn’t a venue I’ve been to before, but I like it. Melvins are also playing Manchester tonight, which is a bit of bad luck for both bands really, as I’m pretty sure there are more than a few shared fans between them. Regardless, those in attendance tonight are in the right place as it turns out. Continue reading “Pelican/Ni – Yes (Pink Room), Manchester – 13/08/25 (Live Review)”

Suffocate for Fuck Sake – To Rest in the Trust, That Creates the World (Review)

Suffocate for Fuck Sake – To Rest in the Trust, That Creates the World (Review)

Suffocate for Fuck Sake - To Rest in the Trust, That Creates the WorldThis is the latest EP by Swedish post-hardcore band Suffocate for Fuck Sake.

This passed me by when it was released earlier in the year, but I’ve finally given it the time it deserves. To Rest in the Trust, That Creates the World contains one track, with a duration of 20 minutes, and it’s a pretty damn special piece. Blessings – Blodsträngen (Review)

Blessings – Blodsträngen (Review)

Blessings - BlodsträngenThis is the third album from Blessings, a Swedish post-hardcore band.

Four years after Biskopskniven made it’s way onto my 2021 end of year list, Blessings are back, with the 41-minute Blodsträngen. Once again we’re gifted with an amalgam of hardcore, noise rock, post-metal, and sludge, giving rise to a post-hardcore experience that’s remarkable. Grayceon – Then the Darkness (Review)

Grayceon – Then the Darkness (Review)

Grayceon - Then the DarknessGrayceon are a progressive metal band from the US and this is their sixth album.

With a striking album cover and containing a member of the fantastic Brume, (also ex-Ludicra), how could I let this one pass me by? Containing a colossal 82 minutes of music, Grayceon are not without ambition, but thankfully have the skill and talent to pull off an endeavour such as Then the Darkness. Hemelbestormer – The Radiant Veil (Review)

Hemelbestormer – The Radiant Veil (Review)

Hemelbestormer - The Radiant VeilHemelbestormer are a post-metal band from Belgium and this is their fourth album.

I rate Hemelbestormer highly, and you should too. 2016’s Aether, 2018’s A Ring of Blue Light, and 2021’s Collide & Merge are all massive slabs of instrumental post-metal/doom, and I heartily recommend them. The Radiant Veil is cut from the same cloth, providing the refined listener with 66 minutes of expressive and atmospheric music to explore. Killjoy – Dream and Violence (Review)

Killjoy – Dream and Violence (Review)

Killjoy - Dream and ViolenceThis is the debut album from Belgian heavy rock band Killjoy.

Killjoy have an engaging sound that embraces a few different influences and fuses them into a very engaging form of modern rock. Across 34 minutes, elements of electronica, screamo, progressive rock, punk, and post-metal are all swallowed up and spat out in the form of seven charismatic tracks that hit the spot. Ba’al – The Fine Line Between Heaven and Here (Review)

Ba’al – The Fine Line Between Heaven and Here (Review)

Ba'al - The Fine Line Between Heaven and HereThis is the second album by Ba’al, a blackened post-metal band from the UK.

I’ve been looking forward to this. 2017’s In Gallows by Mass introduced me to Ba’al’s brand of post-metal, but it was on 2020’s Elipsism where the band truly came into their own, developing a post-black metal framework for their post-metal that was hugely impressive. Last year’s EP Soft Eyes, a quality collection of songs, merely whetted my appetite for more, which we are now gifted with in the form of the 62-minute The Fine Line Between Heaven and Here. Dimscûa – Dust Eater (Review)

Dimscûa – Dust Eater (Review)

Dimscûa - Dust EaterThis is the debut album from UK post-metal band Dimscûa.

It’s unlikely I would have come across this if it wasn’t for the organiser of Damnation Festival‘s enthusiastic endorsement for it on the brilliant 2 Promoters 1 Pod. I’m glad I did though, as it’s a corker. Dust Eater is a 32-minute post-metal/sludge tour de force. Continue reading “Dimscûa – Dust Eater (Review)”

Hiroe – Wield (Review)

Hiroe – Wield (Review)

Hiroe - WieldThis is the debut album from Hiroe, a post-rock/post-metal band from the US.

Wield is a 48-minute instrumental album that combines elements of doom, progressive rock, post-metal, and shoegaze into a compelling post-rock framework. Hiroe are skilled worldbuilders, and their debut album is a strong one. Continue reading “Hiroe – Wield (Review)”

Year of No Light – Les Maîtres Fous (Review)

Year of No Light – Les Maîtres Fous (Review)

Year of No Light - Les Maîtres FousThis is the latest release from French post-metal band Year of No Light.

Les Maîtres Fous is a single 29-minute track that finds Year of No Light at their most droning incarnation. For context for this record, I’m just going to reproduce some of the promo blurb – “Commissioned by Musée Du Quai Branly in Paris for their 2012 ‘L’Invention Du Sauvage’ exhibition, the trance-metal pioneers approached the ritual practices of the Hauka movement as depicted in the film and responded with their uniquely hypnotic heaviness.

Performed only twice, once at the exhibition on the 6th January, 2012 and again in Bordeaux on the 29th January, 2015; this release is a live recording of the second and final performance of ‘Les Maîtres Fous’. ” Continue reading “Year of No Light – Les Maîtres Fous (Review)”
