Notturno - ObsessionsThis is the debut album from Notturno, an Italian black metal band.

Featuring the vocalist of Eyelessight, Notturno play a mix of depressive and atmospheric black metal that also contains elements of doom. There are three epic-length songs on Obsessions, delivering 37 minutes of material in total. Continue reading “Notturno – Obsessions (Review)”

Corpsessed – Succumb to Rot (Review)

Corpsessed - Succumb to RotCorpsessed are a Finnish death metal band and this is their third album, (or fourth, depending on your perspective).

I do so enjoy Corpsessed’s material, (check out 2014’s Abysmal Thresholds and 2018’s Impetus of Death). Four years after their last release, regular as rotten clockwork, they have returned with new platter Succumb to Rot. This release features the band’s most colourful artwork, as well as their shortest running time, (36 minutes). Continue reading “Corpsessed – Succumb to Rot (Review)”

Monuments – In Stasis (Review)

Monuments - In StasisMonuments are a progressive metal band from the UK and this is their fourth album.

Monuments play modern progressive metal with melody and hooks. In Stasis boasts 50 minutes of well-written material to soak up. Monuments have been one of those bands that I’ve heard many good things about over the years, but it’s only now that I’m Continue reading “Monuments – In Stasis (Review)”

Imminent Sonic Destruction – The Sun Will Always Set (Review)

Imminent Sonic Destruction - The Sun Will Always SetThis is the third album from Imminent Sonic Destruction, a progressive metal band from the US.

The Sun Will Always Set contains 52 minutes of expressive progressive metal. It’s an album that might not be what you think it is as it wears many hats across its playing time. Continue reading “Imminent Sonic Destruction – The Sun Will Always Set (Review)”

Qaalm – Resilience & Despair (Review)

Qaalm - Resilience & DespairThis is the debut album from US blackened doom band Qaalm.

So here we have a gargantuan, monstrous record. With only four tracks it’s a long-form foulness that’s on offer here, one that spreads across the 70-minute playing time like a virulent plague. Continue reading “Qaalm – Resilience & Despair (Review)”

Standard Interrogation Techniques: Five Questions for Terzij de Horde (Interview)

Although I’d ideally love to be able to conduct hard-hitting, in-depth interviews, who has the time these days? In lieu of this, I’ve thrown together the below question template, hopefully to gather some interesting and informative results, without taking up too much of anyone’s time.

Introduce yourself – who are you and what do you do?

Epitaphe – II (Review)

Epitaphe - IIEpitaphe are a French progressive death/doom band and this is their second album.

Featuring three near-20-minute songs bookended by a 3-minute intro and outro, II is a mammoth 63-minute offering from this enticing entity. For a simplistic starting point, think of a mix of bands such as Opeth, Nile, and Pink Floyd, and then realise that Epitaphe have even more to offer than this would lead you to believe. Marrasmieli – Martaiden Mailta (Review)

Marrasmieli - Martaiden MailtaMarrasmieli are a black metal band from Finland and this is their second album.

I enjoyed 2020’s Between Land and Sky a great deal, which made Martaiden Mailta one I was definitely looking forward to. Marrasmieli play atmospheric black metal with a clear folk influence, but they balance this against a heart of pure blackened darkness. Continue reading “Marrasmieli – Martaiden Mailta (Review)”
