Noxis – Violence Inherent in the System (Review)

Noxis - Violence Inherent in the SystemNoxis are a death metal band from the US and this is their debut album.

Violence Inherent in the System contains 49 minutes, (with the bonus track), of mayhem. While it’s on the longer side for a death metal album, the quantity is backed up by the quality. Continue reading “Noxis – Violence Inherent in the System (Review)”

Fathomless Ritual – Hymns for the Lesser Gods (Review)

Fathomless Ritual - Hymns for the Lesser GodsThis is the debut album from Fathomless Ritual, a solo death metal band from Canada.

Brought to us by a member of Gutvoid, Hymns for the Lesser Gods is a 39-minute slab of foul death metal. Old-school and cavernous, it fuses technical skill with brute force, making for an unholy merging of sophistication and simplicity. Serpent of Old – Ensemble Under the Dark Sun (Review)

Serpent of Old - Ensemble Under the Dark SunThis is the debut album from Serpent of Old, a death metal band from Turkey.

Featuring the vocalist of Decimation, (also ex-Abolish), Ensemble Under the Dark Sun is a 42-minute monster of extreme metal. Mixing together black metal and doom, with elements of the progressive, dissonant, and atmospheric strains of death metal, Ensemble Under the Dark Sun is shockingly accomplished. Continue reading “Serpent of Old – Ensemble Under the Dark Sun (Review)”

Gutvoid – Durance of Lightless Horizons (Review)

Gutvoid - Durance of Lightless HorizonsThis is the debut album from Canadian death metallers Gutvoid.

Featuring six tracks of monstrous death metal spread across 54 minutes, Gutvoid’s ambition is clear. Phobophilic – Enveloping Absurdity (Review)

Phobophilic - Enveloping AbsurdityThis is the debut album from US death metallers Phobophilic.

Phobophilic combine the esoteric approach of Demilich, with the malevolent nature of Morbid Angel, and the crushing heaviness of Incantation. Fans of the output of bands such as Tomb Mold, Immolation, Worm, Ossuarium, Outer Heaven, and Blood Incantation need to pay attention to this. Label Roundup: Godz Ov War Productions – Eradicate, Toughness, & Angrrsth/Czort (Reviews)

Wonderbox Metal gets sent a lot of new music, (which is great), but there’s no way that everything can get covered unfortunately, (which is not so great). This column hopes to redress this balance, if only slightly, by taking a look at a handful of releases that a record label has recently sent out that might have otherwise slipped through the cracks.

Godz Ov War Productions have released some good albums over the years, so now seemed as good a time as any to catch up with some of their latest output. According to the label, they are “an independent label dedicated to extreme music from the depths of the underground.”Let’s see what they’ve got… Continue reading “Label Roundup: Godz Ov War Productions – Eradicate, Toughness, & Angrrsth/Czort (Reviews)”

Devoid of Thought – Outer World Graves (Review)

Devoid of Thought - Outer World GravesThis is the debut album from Italian death metal band Devoid of Thought.

Billed as cosmic death metal for fans of Blood Incantation, Timeghoul, Voivod, Demilich, and Incantation, Devoid of Thought’s music is cavernous and grim. The band’s raw approach is infused with a doom foundation and gifted with a knack for unusual melodic touches and creative Continue reading “Devoid of Thought – Outer World Graves (Review)”

Tomb Mold – Manor of Infinite Forms (Review)

Tomb MoldTomb Mold are a Canadian death metal band and this is their second album.

This is an interesting release. Ostensibly old-school death metal that reeks of the underground and has a filthy, ugly delivery, there’s also a firmly atypical and non-standard side to these songs which makes Manor of Infinite Forms definitely stand out from the pack. Continue reading “Tomb Mold – Manor of Infinite Forms (Review)”

Savage Annihilation – Quand S’baisse la Croix du Blasphème (Review)

Savage AnnihilationSavage Annihilation are a French death metal band and this is their second album.

Savage Annihilation sound almost exactly as you imagine a band with this name would sound. It’s important to take note of the word ‘almost’ in that sentence, however, as there’s more going on here than you might initially think.
