Sørgelig – Φθορά (Review)

Sørgelig - ΦθοράSørgelig are a Greek black metal band and this is their third album.

I love Isolert, and also really like Insanity Cult. Why do I mention that here? Simply because Sørgelig is made up of members of these two bands, (plus a guitarist who is in neither). I haven’t caught up with Sørgelig since 2018’s Apostate, but the band have been busy since then with EPs, a split, and second album. Φθορά is their third, and a great opportunity to become reacquainted with their brand of hostile malice. Continue reading “Sørgelig – Φθορά (Review)”

Spectral Wound – Songs of Blood and Mire (Review)

Spectral Wound - Songs of Blood and MireThis is the fourth album from Canadian black metallers Spectral Wound.

Songs of Blood and Mire boasts 44 minutes of lethal black metal. Stylistically we’re talking a mixture of the Norwegian, Finnish, and Canadian scenes, so if you’re a fan of bands such as Behexen, Forteresse, Gorgoroth, Sargeist, Tsjuder, etc., then this is for you. Lunar Spells – Sacraments of Necromantical Empires (Review)

Lunar Spells - Sacraments of Necromantical EmpiresThis is the third album from Greek black metal band Lunar Spells.

Ever since first encountering Lunar Spells last year on their split with Order of Nosferat I’ve been interested to see what they could do with a full length, and that time has now arrived. With 36 minutes of piercing black metal, Sacraments of Necromantical Empires has not disappointed. Continue reading “Lunar Spells – Sacraments of Necromantical Empires (Review)”

Taubrą – Therizo (Review)

Taubrą - TherizoThis is the debut album from Taubrą, a Swiss/Norwegian black metal band.

Featuring members of Aara, Forgotten Tomb, Modern Rites, Porta Nigra, and Thron, Therizo contains 41 minutes of old-school black metal. Think of a combination of influences from acts such as Mayhem, Immortal, Behexen, Tsjuder, Marduk, and Gorgoroth, and you’ll be on the right lines. Continue reading “Taubrą – Therizo (Review)”

Trivax – Eloah Burns Out (Review)

Trivax - Eloah Burns OutTrivax are an Iranian/UK black metal band and this is their second album.

Following on from 2016’s SIN, Trivax return with 49 minutes of new material in the dark shape of Eloah Burns Out. This new album offers a more refined, well-developed vision of extreme metal, and is definitely a record you should check out if you’re a fan of black/death metal. Moonthoth – Uroczysko (Review)

Moonthoth - UroczyskoThis is the second album from Polish one-man black metal band Moonthoth.

Uroczysko treats us to 50 minutes of underground black metal. It’s old-school and traditional at heart, yet rich, layered, and adventurous in scope. It has a keen atmospheric edge, is bolstered by powerful symphonic elements, and is not afraid to walk its own path. Continue reading “Moonthoth – Uroczysko (Review)”

Doedsvangr – Serpents ov Old (Review)

Doedsvangr - Serpents ov OldDoedsvangr are a black metal band from Norway/Finland and this is their second album.

2017’s Satan ov Suns was an enjoyable record, so I’m glad we now have a new album of occult second wave black metal fury to explore. Made by musicians with a huge range of experience, (having spent time in bands such as Nordjevel, Behexen, Aosoth, Tsjuder, Sargeist, Horna, Nightbringer, Antaeus,  and Temple of Baal, to name just a handful), Serpents ov Old is the sound of a group that really know what they’re doing with the style. Continue reading “Doedsvangr – Serpents ov Old (Review)”

Behexen – The Poisonous Path (Review)

BehexenThis is the fifth album from this Finnish black metal horde.

There’s something remarkably pure about Behexen that manages to encapsulate everything I like about orthodox black metal, without ever becoming stale or tired.

There’s a lot of music on The Poisonous Path; 58 minutes of utter Continue reading “Behexen – The Poisonous Path (Review)”
