Drouth – The Teeth of Time (Review)

Drouth - The Teeth of TimeThis is the second album from US black/death metal band Drouth.

It’s been five long years since 2020’s Excerpts from a Dread Liturgy, but now Drouth are back, with a new bassist in tow, (current/ex-Cormorant/Ursa). So, let’s turn our attention to the five new songs we have here in the form of the 41-minute The Teeth of Time. Continue reading “Drouth – The Teeth of Time (Review)”

Lust Hag – Irrevocably Drubbed (Review)

Lust Hag - Irrevocably DrubbedThis is the second album from Lust Hag, a solo black metal act from the US.

I didn’t expect a new Lust Hag album so soon after the artist’s first one from last year, but I shouldn’t have been surprised I suppose. After all, since then, she has also released Prayers Unanswered, (a split with Reaping Fields,), and a split with Genital Shame. As a big fan of Lust Hag, the 44-minute Irrevocably Drubbed is very well-received. Continue reading “Lust Hag – Irrevocably Drubbed (Review)”

Carpathian Forest/Black Altar/Wolfbastard – Rebellion, Manchester – 18/03/25 (Live Review)

Carpathian Forest Black Altar Wolfbastard - Rebellion, Manchester - 18.03.25 (Live Review)

Being a fan of Carpathian Forest ever since first getting Strange Old Brew way back in 2000, I knew I wanted to see this show. Black Altar were an added bonus on top. Then, recently, when Wolfbastard were added as opener, it simply meant I was looking forward to it even more. Ninkharsag – The Black Swords of Winter (Review)

Ninkharsag - The Black Swords of WinterThis is the latest EP from UK black metallers Ninkharsag.

This has been a long time coming. In a similar way to the recent Abduction album Existentialismus, I saw Ninkharsag play songs from this release live back in February 2024, but it’s only now seeing the light of day. Has it been worth the wait to hear Ninkharsag’s brand of melodic black metal once more? Continue reading “Ninkharsag – The Black Swords of Winter (Review)”

Insanity Cult – Κάθοδος (Review)

Insanity Cult - ΚάθοδοςInsanity Cult are a black metal band from Greece and this is their fourth album.

New Insanity Cult is always worth taking time out of your busy day to explore. Κάθοδος, (or Kathodos), contains 37 minutes of material for us to experience, and is their shortest and most caustic record yet. Continue reading “Insanity Cult – Κάθοδος (Review)”

Label Roundup: Avantgarde Music – Selvans, Skaldr, and Void of Hope (Reviews)

Wonderbox Metal gets sent a lot of new music, (which is great), but there’s no way that everything can get covered unfortunately, (which is not so great). This column hopes to redress this balance, if only slightly, by taking a look at a handful of releases that a record label has recently sent out that might have otherwise slipped through the cracks.

Surprisingly, I haven’t done one of these columns since 2022! I was genuinely shocked when I realised this recently. So, it seemed like the perfect time to revisit it, and to get caught up on some of Avantgarde Music‘s releases. This is a label I rate highly, and never seem to get enough time to adequately cover, so here’s three new albums all seeing the light of day on January 31st 2025. Order of Nosferat – Towards the Nightrealm of Orlok (Review)

Order of Nosferat - Towards the Nightrealm of OrlokThis is the sixth album from international, (Germany/Finland), black metal band Order of Nosferat.

I’ve had a soft spot for Order of Nosferat since discovering their vampiric brand of black metal on their 2023 split with Lunar Spells, which this year’s The Absence of Grace just reinforced. Yes, this is the band’s second full length of 2024, and across these 45 minutes Order of Nosferat have produced another corker of an album. Get ready for the second wave furious majesty of Towards the Nightrealm of Orlok! Continue reading “Order of Nosferat – Towards the Nightrealm of Orlok (Review)”

Canis Dirus – By the Grace of Death (Review)

Canis Dirus - By the Grace of DeathThis is the fourth album from US black metallers Canis Dirus.

By the Grace of Death contains 38 minutes of atmospheric black metal. Through a captivating mix of hostility, beauty, and dark splendour, Canis Dirus have produced a record that’s undeniably potent. Continue reading “Canis Dirus – By the Grace of Death (Review)”

Ante-Inferno - Death's SoliloquyThis is the third album from UK black metal act Ante-Inferno.
