Korpse – Unethical (Review)

KorpseThis is the second album from Korpse, who are a death metal band from the Netherlands.

This is brutal death metal with a hearty slam component. The band have a powerful sound and really go for the kill.

Heavy riffs rain heavily like a downpour as the band do their absolute best to flatten you. Blast beats and pounding drums make for brutal companions as the band savagely try to attack everything in sight. Continue reading “Korpse – Unethical (Review)”

Tides of Sulfur – Extinction Curse (Review)

Tides of SulphurThis is the début album from Tides of Sulfur, a death/sludge metal band from the UK.

Like The Dead, Tides of Sulfur combine death and sludge metal together into a hideous, swampy mass. Also like The Dead, it’s hard to know whether to categorise them as death metal or sludge metal. Essentially it doesn’t really matter, I suppose, as the band manage to provide a pretty good synthesis of the two on Extinction Curse.

This is heavy, heavy, heavy. Continue reading “Tides of Sulfur – Extinction Curse (Review)”

Temple Nightside – The Hecatomb (Review)

Temple NightsideTemple Nightside are a blackened death metal band from Australia and this is their second album.

The first thing that attracted me to this album was the cover. Mysterious and ominous; the music naturally follows from this too. Also like the cover, the music is quite terrifying when you stop, really pay attention to it and let its dark atmospheres seep into you.

This is music that reeks of the bestial underground; the region that’s inhabited by Continue reading “Temple Nightside – The Hecatomb (Review)”

Wederganger/Laster – Split (Review)

Wederganger LasterWederganger and Laster both play black metal and are both from the Netherlands. They have teamed up for this very tasty split.

Wederganger contribute one song, Klaroenen Van de Dood, lasting almost 15 minutes. They’ve been featured on this site before with their début album Halfvergaan Ontwaakt, which was an enjoyable listen that fused orthodox black metal with epic, folk influences.

On this split the band show their predilection for Darkthrone/Satyricon-styled grooves Continue reading “Wederganger/Laster – Split (Review)”

Vow of Thorns – Farewell to the Sun (Review)

Vow of ThornsVow of Thorns are a post-black metal band from Canada, and this is their début album.

This is post-black metal with liberal lashings of the depressive and doom styles, and a taste for the progressive too.

The songs have a depressive black metal feel to them, coming from their general demeanour and the melodies used. Continue reading “Vow of Thorns – Farewell to the Sun (Review)”

Monolithe – Zeta Reticuli (Review)

MonolitheMonolithe are a French doom band, and this is their sixth album.

Monolithe are no stranger to this site, having been covered previously here, here and here. This latest album is the second part, a companion release, as it were, to their last one, Epsilon Aurigae, and continues their evolution away from their original funeral doom style into uncharted territories.

Like Epsilon Aurigae, Zeta Reticuli sees the band keeping aspects of funeral doom, but adding increasingly progressive influences to their sound. It also sees them keeping the same format – three songs, 15:00 minutes each, exactly. Continue reading “Monolithe – Zeta Reticuli (Review)”

Nogrod – Abstruce Dismal (Review)

NogrodThis is the début EP from this Indian blackened death metal band.

Think of bands like Behemoth and Belphegor – bands that combine the brutality of death metal with the occult malevolence of black metal. This is the world that Nogrod inhabit.

This is either black metal with a death metal influence, or blackened death metal, depending Continue reading “Nogrod – Abstruce Dismal (Review)”

Revocation – Great Is Our Sin (Review)

RevocationThis is the sixth album from Revocation, a US death/thrash metal band.

Revocation have been steadily building a solid reputation for themselves over the years, and when you look at their latest release it’s easy to see why.

Here we have a band that combines death metal, thrash metal, technicality and even a bit of Continue reading “Revocation – Great Is Our Sin (Review)”

Interview with Katalepsy

Katalepsy Logo

I’m a big fan of death metal, it’s fair to say, and I listen to a lot of it. Sometimes though, something sticks out as particularly enjoyable or exceptional, and Gravenous Hour by Katalepsy is one such release, making it more than worthy enough for an extra grilling…
