Nogrod – Abstruce Dismal (Review)

NogrodThis is the début EP from this Indian blackened death metal band.

Think of bands like Behemoth and Belphegor – bands that combine the brutality of death metal with the occult malevolence of black metal. This is the world that Nogrod inhabit.

This is either black metal with a death metal influence, or blackened death metal, depending on your perspective. I suppose it doesn’t really matter either way; Nogrod continue to push punishing riffs and vengeful vocals regardless. I’m gonna go with the latter, because, why not?

The vocals consist of both growls and screams, both delivered well and certainly not lacking in conviction.

The songs are brutal and scything. Successfully born from the two parent styles, they have inherited the main characteristics of both, producing offspring that live in both worlds and neither, in a similar way to the aforementioned bands. At the moment, Nogrod have got some way to go before they can fully stand next to their forerunners as equal peers, but to be honest there’s enough promise and raw talent here that it wouldn’t surprise me if it wasn’t that long before they were up to the task. A few tweaks here and there, the right label backing and some lucky breaks…Hell, we could have a hidden future gem here.

However, staying in the present for the moment – Abstruce Dismal is good enough on its own rights to merit your attentions. This is quality blackened death metal with good songs, good riffs and good atmospheres.

Check it out, and be sure to keep an eye out for what they do next as well.
