Fallujah – Dreamless (Review)

FallujahFallujah are from the US and this is their third album of progressive death metal.

Fallujah are one of the more interesting and individual bands out there. Their previous album The Flesh Prevails was an exceptional release that really showcased their blend of technical/progressive death metal, with bright melodies and soundscapes created with ease, all wrapped around a modern death metal core.

They have now returned with Continue reading “Fallujah – Dreamless (Review)”

Schammasch – Triangle (Review)

SchammaschSchammasch are a Black Metal band from Switzerland. This is their third album.

Here we have a bold, monster of a release; divided into three parts, each lasting about 35 minutes, the entire body of work clocks in at a massive 105 minutes in length.

Schammasch play forward-thinking music that’s rooted in Black Metal, but also visits other styles such as Doom, Post-Black Metal and Progressive Metal.

Cult of Luna/Bossk/Moloken – Sound Control, Manchester – 10/04/16 (Live Review)

cult of luna live tour poster
This tour revolves around Cult of Luna playing all of their fourth album, Somewhere Along the Highway, in its entirety for its ten year anniversary. As they’re one of my favourite bands and that album is sooooo good, this tour was one not to be missed as far as I’m concerned. The quality support acts of Bossk and Moloken are simply an added bonus.

Interview with Sunwølf

Sunwolf Header

Sunwølf’s fourth album Eve is an extremely engaging Post-Metal release that has quickly wormed its way into my heart. Curious to find out a bit more about the album, I got in touch with head honcho Matt to tell me a bit more about Eve…

For those who are unfamiliar with your band – introduce yourself!

We’re Sunwølf, an instrumental band from Scotland. We formed in 2012 and have released 3 records with a fourth (Eve) due out on 18 April.

Give us a bit of background to Sunwølf

We formed four years ago in Leeds as a duo. We had been playing a lot of ambient music in another band but wanted to create something more abrasive, whilst keeping a hand in the ambient scene also. We had a busy few years of touring and releasing records, playing with some great bands along the way (Chelsea Wolfe, Forest Swords, Dragged into Sunlight, Bossk & more).

Pyramido – Vatten (Review)

PyramidoThis is the fourth album from Swedish Sludge/ Doom band Pyramido.

Saga was a very strong album, and now that Pyramido return with Vatten it’s clear that it wasn’t a one-off fluke.

Pyramido are heavy and crushing. Vatten exemplifies these traits and the album is 38 minutes of emotively flattening guitars and distorted atmospherics.

Anguished screams tear out of the music as lonesome leads and tortured melodies rise out from the body of the music. Although the heaviness is a constant companion, it’s not Pyramido’s only weapon in the war against silence, as they also show they can play introspectively in more of a Post-Metal way.

On Vatten the band seem to have injected a little more nuance and shading into their songs; even though they had this on Saga for sure, it seems more developed here, with the time being taken to cultivate greater mood and feeling via the leads and rhythms.

Even when all of this happens though, the heavy riffs are not too far away, and the Sludge Metal gets its way in the end. The truly wonderful moments occur when the heavy riffs are providing the emotive content, and on those occasions Vatten is at its best.

These tracks compel you to pay attention, as the groovy and emotive guitars draw you in, engaging with their fury and hypnotic delivery.

Highly recommended.

Starchitect – Results (Review)

StarchitectStarchitect are from the Ukraine and this is their second album. They play Post-Metal.

Starchitect’s music is a cross between Memories of a Deadman, Cult of Luna and Russian Circles.

These songs have some decent riffs, with some quite memorable parts to them too. I also enjoy some of the more atypical guitar parts where the band consciously seem to be making an effort to try something a bit different.

The music is quite involved and atmospheric, coming across as well-thought out and the kind of thing you would normally hear from an instrumental band, rather than one which does have a vocalist like Starchitect do.

Speaking of vocals; the singer uses harsh shouts to get his point across and his voice does the job nicely, fitting into the typical Post-Metal framework. His voice is used quite sparingly, increasing my impression of them as an instrumental band, (which they aren’t, of course).

Effectively building up a tapestry of overlapping guitar-based sounds and melodies set to a thumping beat and with the odd coarse-vocal, Starchitect have produced an enjoyable 58 minutes of music.

A recommended listen.

Sunwølf – Eve (Review)

SunwolfSunwølf are a Scottish Post-Metal band and this is their fourth album.

Sunwølf play Post-Metal that takes elements of Doom, Stoner and Post-Hardcore into the mix.

This reminds me of UK Doomsters Palehorse if they were mixed in with Earth and wrapped up in the Post-Metal trappings of someone like Red Sparowes.

Slow, mournful guitar parts crawl along the frost-battered ruins of long-dead mountains while Post-Metal melodies effortlessly gleam resplendently under the uncaring sun.

These tracks paint pictures of dangerous-yet-beautiful landscapes that form a rich and textured release, laced with sorrow and despondency. The songs have a raw, emotive edge to them that’s hard to deny and even on just the first listen you find yourself getting drawn into them. Subsequent spins reveal additional features to catch the attention and the heart.

Vocals are sparse and uncommon; when they do appear they are used well, as required by the song. This includes screams that are tinged with anguish and pain, occasionally taking on a cleaner hue to give vent to a more plaintive side, as well as spoken word sections and chants that are almost buried under the music.

This is a very engaging release that has a lot of content to enjoy over the 51 minute playing time. This is an album that deserves a lot of exposure, although I doubt it will get it, which is criminal.

Highly recommended. Check this out immediately.

Cult of Luna and Julie Christmas – Mariner (Review)

Cult of Luna and Julie ChristmasCult of Luna are a Post-Metal band from Sweden and Julie Christmas is a US solo artist and ex-member of such bands as Battle of Mice and Made out of Babies.

Well, this is a bit exciting. Cult of Luna are one of my favourite bands and Julie Christmas is one of my favourite vocalists. Put them together, and I can’t see how this could be anything short of amazing. Continue reading “Cult of Luna and Julie Christmas – Mariner (Review)”

Krigsgrav – Waves of Degradation (Review)

KrigsgravKrigsgrav are a Black Metal band from the US and this is their fourth album.

This is long and expansive Black Metal with a melodic edge. It’s vibrant and exploratory without losing focus and across these lengthy tracks the band take the time to unfold their vision of what Black Metal should look, feel and sound like in 2016.

If you take the depressive core of a band like Forgotten Tomb and add some Post-Black Metal influences, then you’ll be in the right area of where Krigsgrav lurk. Elements of depressive and melodic Black Metal round this out, as well as some aspects of funeral Doom.

With a decent recording the band’s compositions take on a dark life of their own. All of the instruments sound clear and precise, and I always like an album that you can hear the bass on, especially when it makes a valid and noticeable contribution to the music.

Additional instrumentation appears here and there, adding extra tools to the band’s repertoire and deepening the depths of sound that they create.

The vocals are notably impressive; ragged screams that sound like the singer is ripping his throat out are enhanced by the occasional deeper growl and some powerful cleans.

The songs describe harrowing tales of misery and hopelessness, set against a backdrop of just enough light and possibility so as to make the dark atmospheres all the worse. The mixture of lighter sections and heavier, blackened distortion work well and the build/release Post-Metal mechanic is used effectively in a Post-Black Metal environment.

Waves of Degradation is an impressive listen and has more than enough content to compel you to visit it again and again.

Recommended.

Rats of Reality – Obsequies (Review)

Rats of RealityThis is the latest EP by Rats of Reality, who are a Blackened Crust/Thrash band from the UK.

A short EP at only 11 minutes in length, Rats of Reality manage to have an unexpected start to this release which throws me slightly, before proceeding to demonstrate that yes, they may play some gnarly, crusty, fast-paced blackened grimness, but they do it in unusual and unexpected ways.

On paper, bands like this are plentiful and there’s sometimes very little to differentiate them from each other. As mentioned though, Rats of Reality are a bit different as they also use riffs that are a whole lot more emotive than most bands of this ilk write. They don’t always do this, (Leeches, for example, is a much more straightforward proposition), but when they do the melodies sometimes border on something you’re more likely to get from a Post-Metal/Shoegaze band, and at other times definitely are. Deafheaven plays Crust? Kind of.

Regardless, it’s an interesting and unusual slant on a well-worn sub-genre and overall Obsequies is enriched by these more melodic, emotive guitars. The ugliness of the core style is still here, but now it’s a beautiful ugliness. Or something. Just listen to it, you’ll get what I mean.

I’m pleased by this, as Rats of Reality have surprised and impressed me. I always enjoy it when a band does something a little different, especially if you weren’t expecting them to, and this certainly qualifies.

Highly recommended.
