Ithaca – The Language of Injury (Review)

Ithaca – The Language of Injury (Review)

ithaca - the language of injuryIthaca are a metallic hardcore band from the UK and this is their debut album.

I’ll be honest, whenever I see a band described as metallic hardcore my eyes kind of glaze over as a first response. However, the promo blurb for this one intrigued me, I must confess, so I’ll reproduce it here – “Formed out of a mutual love of metallic hardcore but despair at its lack of ambition, Ithaca draw influence from everything from Southern doom to 90’s math rock as well as the untethered savagery of early Poison The Well and melodious battery of Oathbreaker.” Couple this with Continue reading “Ithaca – The Language of Injury (Review)”

A Secret Revealed – Sacrifices (Review)

A Secret Revealed – Sacrifices (Review)

a secret revealed - sacrificesThis is the second album from A Secret Revealed, a post-metal band from Germany.

The band’s debut album – 2015’s The Bleakness – was an album that I thoroughly enjoyed and stuck out with its vision of heavy, emotive modern post-metal. Continue reading “A Secret Revealed – Sacrifices (Review)”

Erlen Meyer – Sang et Or (Review)

Erlen Meyer - Sang et OrErlen Meyer are from France and play post-hardcore/metal. This is their second album.

I’ve been looking forward to this release ever since the band’s 2013’s self-titled debut. I managed to catch them live at 2016’s Damnation Festival and interview them too, so this is definitely an album I’ve been awaiting. Continue reading “Erlen Meyer – Sang et Or (Review)”

Carrion Mother – Nothing Remains (Review)

Carrion Mother – Nothing Remains (Review)

Carrion Mother - Nothing RemainsThis is the second album from German doom band Carrion Mother.

On Nothing Remains Carrion Mother are channelling their internal harshness in no uncertain terms. In fact, this has now become external harshness that has spread across four tracks, and lasts 53 minutes. Nothing Remains is a colossal monster of harshness and, well, more harshness. Le Menhir – Aube (Review)

Le Menhir – Aube (Review)

Le Menhir - AubeLe Menhir is a one man post-metal band from the UK and this is his latest EP.

Earlier in the year I had the pleasure of listening to the debut release from this project, Orage. Well, the artist is now back with a new three track EP. After a brief intro track, we get two songs of new material, lasting 17 minutes in total. Continue reading “Le Menhir – Aube (Review)”

Haven – Anima (Review)

Haven – Anima (Review)

Haven - AnimaThis is the debut EP from German post-metal band Haven.

This is music with dark undertones and ambient atmosphere. Haven mix together the atmospheric allure of post-metal, with the harsher framing of post-hardcore, and the delicate introspection of progressive rock. These influences collide Continue reading “Haven – Anima (Review)”

Dirge – Lost Empyrean (Review)

Dirge – Lost Empyrean (Review)

Dirge - Lost EmpyreanThis is the seventh album from Dirge, an atmospheric sludge/post-metal band from France.

I loved 2014’s Hyperion, which was one of my favourite releases of that year. Last year the band released the experimental electronically-slanted Alma | Batica, which I also really enjoyed. It’s great to finally have a new full length from the band though, one which offers us their rich use of guitars once more. Continue reading “Dirge – Lost Empyrean (Review)”

There’s 10 minutes of nastiness here, with 40% of the playing time taken up by the closer Freedom Is Slavery. Continue reading “Blockthesun – Blockthesun (Review)”
