Sinister Downfall – A Dark Shining Light (Review)

Sinister Downfall - A Dark Shining LightThis is the second album from Sinister Downfall, a one-man funeral doom band from Germany.

A Dark Shining Light contains 51 minutes downbeat, mournful music. Slow and moody, this is funeral doom that’s solemn and relentlessly engaging. Continue reading “Sinister Downfall – A Dark Shining Light (Review)”

Descend into Despair – Opium (Review)

Descend into Despair - OpiumDescend into Despair are a Romanian doom metal band, and this is their third album.

I like Descend into Despair very much. Both 2014’s The Bearer of All Storms and 2017’s Synaptic Veil scratched that funeral doom itch quite nicely. Continue reading “Descend into Despair – Opium (Review)”

Convocation – Ashes Coalesce (Review)

Convocation - Ashes CoalesceConvocation are a funeral doom band from Finland, and this is their second album.

I enjoyed 2018’s Scars Across; the band’s brand of atmospheric funeral death/doom was crushingly oppressive and filled with misery, just as you’d want something like this to be. Convocation have now returned with 45 minutes of Continue reading “Convocation – Ashes Coalesce (Review)”

Noctu – Gelidae Mortis Imago (Review)

Noctu - Gelidae Mortis ImagoThis is the second album from Italy’s one-man blackened doom band Noctu.

Vij (Вий) – Oblivium (Review)

Vij (Вий) - ObliviumThis is the second album from Вий, (otherwise known as Vij), an Italian doom/sludge band.

Vij’s music is dark and heavy, combining harsh sludge and funeral doom. It’s a great mixture of the two styles, making for an absorbing album that’s a little different from what many other doom/sludge bands are doing. Continue reading “Vij (Вий) – Oblivium (Review)”

Monolithe – Okta Khora (Review)

Monolithe - Okta KhoraThis is the eighth album from French doom metallers Monolithe.

Monolithe can do no wrong in my humble opinion. Across many releases, (here, here, here, here, here, and here, for example), the band have consistently delivered the sort of quality, engrossing doom metal that just keeps drawing you back no matter how much time you give it. Okta Khora is no different in this regard. Continue reading “Monolithe – Okta Khora (Review)”
