Bismarck are a doom metal band from Norway and this is their debut album.
Here we have 35 minutes of doom metal that incorporates quite a few different sub-styles into its melting pot. Drawing on influences from stoner, doom, drone, progressive, sludge, psychedelic, and post-metal, Urkraft is a well-rounded and satisfying slab of heaviness. Cave Bastard are from the US and are a death metal band. This is their debut album.
With a name like Cave Bastard and an album cover and logo like this, how could I not want to check this out? I’m pleased to say that this initial promise has been fulfilled, and what we have here is 31 minutes of sonic violence and intensity. Continue reading “Cave Bastard – The Bleak Shall Devour the Earth (Review)”
This is the third album from US stoner/sludge/doom band Eagle Twin.
This is blues-inflected doom, taking a dirty stoner influence and spreading it far and wide with a low and heavy sludgy doom coating. Continue reading “Eagle Twin – The Thundering Heard (Songs of Hoof and Horn) (Review)”
Nadir are a sludge/death metal band from Hungary and this is their sixth album.
The Sixth Extinction features 33 minutes of sludgy death metal. Think of a cross between Crowbar and Bolt Thrower and you’ll not be too far off from where Nadir operate. There’s also a touch of Obituary, Coffins, Incantation, and High on Fire here and there. Continue reading “Nadir – The Sixth Extinction (Review)”
This is the third album from French progressive metal band Eryn Non Dae.
Has it really been 6 years since 2012’s Meliora was released? Admittedly I only discovered it in 2104, but still. Ye gods! Meliora was a hugely distinctive and individual release, one that made a strong impression with me and that I’ve enjoyed exploring and getting to know over the years. Continue reading “Eryn Non Dae – Abandon of the Self (Review)”
This is the second album from Belgian post-metallers Hemelbestormer.
Having enjoyed 2016’s Aether, listening to A Ring of Blue Light was a no-brainer really. On this second release Hemelbestormer’s atmospheric metal has not disappointed. Continue reading “Hemelbestormer – A Ring of Blue Light (Review)”
Sixes are a doom/sludge band from the US and this is their debut album.
You know that you can never, ever have enough filthy, ugly doom, right? I mean, it’s just not possible.
Enter Sixes.
Methistopheles is a colossal 62 minutes of feedback, Earth-shaking distortion, apocalyptic melodies, and throat-destroying vocals. And boy does it grab you and not let go until the bitter end. Continue reading “Sixes – Methistopheles (Review)”
Lowered are a blackened doom band from the US and this is their debut album.
Lowered play black/sludge/doom metal with skill, talent, and no small amount of grim mood. Continue reading “Lowered – Lowered (Review)”
This is the fifth album from US sludge metal band Ilsa.
Ilsa are well-known around these parts for being prime suppliers of dirty, heavy, riff-driven kicking metallic sludge. 2015’s The Felon Claw and 2012’s Intoxicantations in particular were both huge, crushing records which still get regular rotation from yours truly. Continue reading “Ilsa – Corpse Fortress (Review)”
