The new In Vain album – Currents – is a progressive death metal treasure trove of sweeping music and grandiose structuring. Full of epic songs and engaging, sometimes eclectic delights, it’s a engrossing mix of melodic black/death metal mixed with progressive highlights. Interview with Hamferð

In my humble opinion, Hamferð have recently released an early contender for album of the year in their stunning latest album Támsins Likam. Yes, yes, I know; bold claims…it’s only January…blah blah blah, but I’d be shocked if this wasn’t a release that ends up getting some seriously high places on a lot of lists eventually. Time will tell, of course…

WVRM’s latest EP Can You Hear the Wind Howl may only last a very brief nine minutes, but it’s 9 minutes of savage darkness and cutting, lethal ferocity. Italian modern death metal band Integral’s debut album Resilience is a strong one. I’m listening to it again as I type these words, and it has a lot to recommend itself. Don’t believe me? Interview with Unseen Faith

As I sit here typing these words, listening once again to Unseen Faith’s debut album Waver, I’m struck by just how truly passionate and engaging the band’s performance is. This comes across strongly in the vocals, of course, but it’s more than just the singer’s caustic shouts and growls; this passionate energy seems to infect every pore of the band’s delivery.

As you can see from my linked review of the album, I enjoyed it a lot, (it wouldn’t have gotten reviewed otherwise), but I must say that Waver is more of a grower than I first realised. The more I listen to it the better it gets, which is always something I ideally look for in a release.
