WVRM – Can You Hear the Wind Howl (Review)

WVRMWVRM are a US grindcore band and this is their latest EP.

Although you should never judge the proverbial book by its proverbial cover, something about this band screamed to me that I was going to love them the moment I pressed play. I was not wrong.

Yep, I can’t get enough of this kind of thundering, hyper-aggressive grindcore. It just works so very, very well. Pitch black in outlook and with a jagged lethality that you can almost taste, this brief EP may only be nine minutes long, but it’s nine minutes of utter, mind-searing brutality and nastiness.

The music is mostly condensed, tight, and furiously fast. However, there’s also an extremely effective sludge aspect to the band’s sound which occasionally manifests, enabling them to pull off some slower, uglier feats of barbarity. Suffer Ritual, the longest song here at a full third of the play time, is the most blatant example of this. They also pull out some serious hardcore groove now and again, although this usually disappears in a storm of savagery after a short while.

Prior to this EP I was completely unaware of WVRM and their nightmare sound. You’d better believe I’m going to check out their older material now, as I urge you to check this one out.

All together now…GRIIIINNNDDD!!!
