Vorus is a solo death metal band from Romania, and this is his debut demo.
This is blackened old-school death metal; ugly, stinking, filthy, and brutal. Continue reading “Vorus – Chamber of Laments (Review)”

This is the fourth album from Germany’s Arroganz, a black/death metal band.
My last encounter with Arroganz was their previous 2014 album Tod & Teufel, and now they have returned with a new slab of dark music, but one that has seen the band undergo a blackened metamorphosis of sorts. Continue reading “Arroganz – Primitiv (Review)”
This is the debut album from Antiversum, a blackened death metal band from Switzerland.
Okay, so I’ve tentatively labelled this as blackened death metal simply for ease of description in the introduction, but the reality is that this is more of a black/death/doom hybrid. It all sits under a suitably blackened and grim aegis though, powered by a vicious death metal intensity. Continue reading “Antiversum – Cosmos Comedenti (Review)”
Black Blood Invocation are a Greek blackened death metal band and this is their debut release.
After a rather ominous intro, we get three songs of ugly, bestial death metal that sound as if a blackened tar has been poured over them and left to rot. Continue reading “Black Blood Invocation – Black Blood Invocation (Review)”
Samot are a blackened death metal band from Chile and this is their debut EP.
With a rumbling, old-school sound, this is a cobweb-strewn blend of old-school death metal and equally old-school black metal. The music combines both of these effectively and naturally, making for an enjoyable release of atavistic darkness. Continue reading “Samot – Across the Abyss (Review)”
This is the debut album of US blackened death metal band Suffering Hour.

Earth Rot are an Australian blackened death metal band and this is their second album.
As Earth Rot’s last EP Chthonian Virtues was one of my favourite releases from 2016, I was very excited to hear Renascentia.

This is the latest EP by US death metallers Vorzug.
This is blackened death metal. It’s an old-school concoction with dark melodies and vicious riffs. Continue reading “Vorzug – Three (Review)”
Lantern are a blackened death metal band from Finland and this is their second album.
Lantern positively reek of old-school death metal’s foul, atavistic stench, albeit one that’s been dipped in the grim waters of black metal’s malevolence. Death metal is the overriding style here, but there’s enough of a blackened influence to allow for it in the genre tag. Continue reading “Lantern – II: Morphosis (Review)”
