Moanaa – Passage (Review)

MoanaaMoanaa are a Polish post-metal band, and this is their second album.

Passage is the follow up to 2014’s stellar Descent, which has become one of my favourite releases of the style in a while. A combination of post-metal, sludge and progressive metal, all wrapped up with glorious atmospherics and heavy guitars; the album was a slow-burner that just got better and better the more I listened to it.

Now it’s time for their second album, so how have they done on Passage? Continue reading “Moanaa – Passage (Review)”

Interview with Khaldera

Khaldera Header

Alteration is the latest EP by Swiss post-metallers Khaldera. It’s a short, sweeping collection of instrumental music that uses texture and colour well to create the moods that the band want. It’s a slow-burner, one that demands repeated listens as it slowly, inevitably reveals its secrets to the keen listener.

The music unfolds in such a way that there seems to be more to it than a mere 18 minutes, bit no; soon enough it’s gone, and you’re left wanting more.

It’s time to delve a bit deeper…

Give us a bit of background to Khaldera

We’re three Swiss Shamans born deep below the earth’s crust, wandering through the dark woods, finding our way into space.

What are your influences?

Of course we are somehow influenced by our own “music consumption”, but we don’t orientate ourselves on any other bands in terms of crafting our songs. There are a couple of influential artists, although they’re not necessarily recognisable if you listen to us. At the time when Sven and Fabio started the band, the hypnotic sound of Minsk‘s great “The Ritual Fires of Abandonment”, as well as their live performances ignited a certain energy to go beyond what they have done up to this point. In general we appreciate bands who are able to transform themselves and musically grow over the time. Continue reading “Interview with Khaldera”

Third Island – Dusk (Review)

Third IslandThis is the debut EP from Irish post-metal/doom band Third Island.

Building atmosphere with steady grace and gentle insistence, Third Island take a subtle, almost-sensual approach to their post-metal explorations. That’s not to say that they don’t know how to ramp up Continue reading “Third Island – Dusk (Review)”

Khaldera – Alteration (Review)

KhalderaKhaldera are from Switzerland. They play post-metal and this is their second EP.

Khaldera play their music as an instrumental band with plenty of atmosphere.

Weaving heavy, down-beat grooves with atmospheric doom and post-metal contemplation, this 18 minute Continue reading “Khaldera – Alteration (Review)”

Memoirs of a Secret Empire – Vertigo (Review)

Memoirs of a Secret EmpireMemoirs of a Secret Empire, (otherwise known as MOASE), are a post-metal band from Portugal, and this is their debut album.

This is expansive and progressive post-metal that creates mood and feeling through instrumental songs that belie the fact that there’s only three members of the band.

Well, I say instrumental – there are some Continue reading “Memoirs of a Secret Empire – Vertigo (Review)”

Falaise – As Time Goes By (Review)

FalaiseThis is the debut album from Falaise, an atmospheric/post-black metal band from Italy.

Melancholic and full of depressive moods and feelings, Falaise’s debut album is filled to the brim with sadness, loss and abandoned hope.

The band channel this misery into 61 minutes of atmospheric/post-black metal that uses fragility as a weapon and despondency as an end unto itself.

In many ways this is a product of the blackgaze scene, with all that entails.  Continue reading “Falaise – As Time Goes By (Review)”

Russian Circles – Guidance (Review)

Russian CirclesRussian Circles are an instrumental post-rock/metal band from the US. This is their sixth album.

Russian Circles are a band who have produced some thoroughly enjoyable albums over the years, ones that I regularly return to. Instrumental bands like this frequently leave me cold, as I all-too-often feel that something is missing Continue reading “Russian Circles – Guidance (Review)”

Inter Arma – Paradise Gallows (Review)

Inter ArmaInter Arma are a US post-metal band and this is their third album.

Well, here we have something that has a massive amount of expectation attached to it, at least from me. Their 2014 release The Cavern was a single 45 minute track that came close to attaining perfection. It was, quite simply, the best thing I heard that year, which is why it was my album of the year for 2014.

So, it’s with no pressure, (hehe), that I pressed play on their latest release, and let the band’s involved soundscapes take me away. Continue reading “Inter Arma – Paradise Gallows (Review)”

Vukari – Divination (Review)

VukariThis is the second album from Vukari, a post-black metal band from the US.

With such striking album art, my fervent wish was for the album to match the quality of the cover.

My wish was granted.

Vukari play a very modern take on black metal that covers both its atmospheric and post-black metal bases well.

Atmosphere is something that Vukari foster easily, amidst Continue reading “Vukari – Divination (Review)”

Summit – The Winds That Forestall Thy Return (Review)

SummitThis is the début album from atmospheric progressive/sludge/post-metal, (phew), solo-project-with-guests Summit.

This is an album that works its wonders in moods and feelings, spread over the playing time with lovingly crafted care and attention to detail.

I like that this album has quite a lot going on. Continue reading “Summit – The Winds That Forestall Thy Return (Review)”
