Ribspreader – Reap Humanity (Review)

Ribspreader - Reap HumanityRibspreader are a Swedish death metal band and this is their tenth album.

Brought to us by the incredibly prolific Rogga Johansson, (Down Among the Dead Men, Echelon, Megascavenger, Paganizer, Those Who Bring the Torture, and a million others), along with current/ex-members of Deicide, Inhuman Condition, Kill Division, Venom Inc., and Wombbath), Reap Humanity boasts 36 minutes of experienced death metal carnage.

This is morbid old-school death metal that’s rooted in the Swedish style, but isn’t restricted by it, (witness the slithering Morbid Angel riff in Count Damnation as just one example of the band’s wider set of influences). Honestly, there are many assets at play on Reap Humanity, but the array of world-ending riffs that the album contains is impressive.

The music’s blend of macabre atmosphere, sinister melodies, meaty riffs, and brutal roars is simple and effective. It’s a classic song-based approach that makes the most of the band members’ abilities to write catchy, memorable death metal tunes. The songs are accessible and fun, but without sacrificing their underground feel or their intimidatingly powerful bite.

Reap Humanity delivers rotting vistas of corpse-strewn battlefields for the listener to navigate. It’s a feast of traditional heaviness that’s extremely easy to enjoy if you’re a fan of the classic style. Ribspreader know death metal, and Reap Humanity channels this intimate knowledge into songs that demand your attention with a meathook to the throat. For lovers of old-school death metal there’s nothing to dislike here.
