Hail the Void – Memento Mori (Review)

Hail the Void - Memento MoriHail the Void are a doom/stoner metal band from Canada and this is their second album.

Memento Mori is a doom metal record that pays homage to the classic style, while delivering an experience that 2023 should be pleased to host.

Across 44 minutes Hail the Void mix stoner, classic, and psychedelic metal and rock into a potent brew that should definitely be supped by fans of Windhand, Kal-El, and Electric Wizard. Within this though Hail the Void also demonstrate an ambition, depth, and personality of their own.

Memento Mori is a hypnotic record that captivates and absorbs. The psychedelic journey that the band take the listener on is filled with giant heavy riffs and hazy introspection. The album flows like smoke drifts across the night, with gradual grace and as a herald of fire.

The music is traditional in scope, yet the application of this well-worn style is fresh and vibrant, in its own doomy, gloomy way. Bluesy rhythms and massive riffs are the band’s stock-in-trade, and they use these to construct songs that hit the mark easily. Effortlessly heavy metal and overtly hard rock, Hail the Void bridge the gap between these parent styles with doom swagger and a patient confidence.

Memento Mori is a strong stoner-influenced doom album that should find favour with many fans of the genre. Make sure that you check out what Hail the Void are doing.

Highly recommended.
