Apparition – Disgraced Emanations from a Tranquil State (Review)

Apparition - Disgraced Emanations from a Tranquil StateApparition are a death metal band from the US and this is their second album.

Featuring an ex-member of Nails, Apparition play progressive death/doom metal. On Disgraced Emanations from a Tranquil State they deliver 38-minutes of music that hits the spot.

As a rough starting point for Disgraced Emanations from a Tranquil State, think of a combination of bands such as Tomb Mold, Immolation, Incantation, and Death, all fed into a blender and used as the base for Apparition’s grim libations. It’s an old-school brew that tastes as foul as liquidised corpses, yet lingers pleasantly on the palate after supping, filling you with a satisfaction that comes from having experienced a quality death metal vintage.

This is death metal that has embraced both progressive metal’s exploratory proclivities and doom’s cavernous depths. Built upon a secure foundation of casual brutality and macabre atmosphere, Apparition’s music is enjoyable and well-crafted. The songs are interesting, detailed, and engaging, with creative flourishes tattooed across death metal muscle that’s lean and firm. I especially like the use of synths; these standout when they appear, but they’re used sparingly, increasing their impact. There are some monstrous riffs on this thing too.

Disgraced Emanations from a Tranquil State is an enjoyable and satisfying record, with many songwriting gems to unearth across its running time. As always, I could definitely have done without the pointless interlude track, (I genuinely don’t understand why bands do this to their albums), but other than this, Apparition have put out a winner.

Very highly recommended.
