Coffin Mulch are a Scottish death metal band and this is their debut album.
Spectral Intercession features 31 minutes of old-school death metal, delivered primarily in the Swedish style, (although not exclusively). Yep, grab your chainsaw, and get ready for carnage. If you’re a fan of bands such as Entombed, Dismember, Bloodbath, and Entrails, but also want something with buckets of Autopsy and Asphyx thrown in, as well as a smudge of hardcore and a whiff of doom, then Coffin Mulch have got you covered.
Coffin Mulch’s putrid death metal is downright hostile and unfriendly, and they don’t take any prisoners. In many ways you may have essentially heard this type of thing before, but when it’s as well-realised as it is here, who cares? Besides, Coffin Mulch have an honest personality, a raw aggressive presence, and a filthy energy that’s refreshing in such a well-worn style.
Coffin Mulch march an army of riffs into the meat grinder in order to achieve bloody victory. The band’s gruesome grooves and fiendish rhythms are dripping with morbid character, and their faster aspects are vicious and cruel. Ominous, macabre atmosphere is this style’s birthright, and this cloaks the malevolent riffs, feral vocals, and unwholesome percussion like malignant growths.
With solid songwriting and an authentic, raw delivery, Spectral Intercession has an easy foul charisma that draws you in whether you want it to or not. Coffin Mulch’s straightforward brand of ugly death metal never fails to entertain, and this entire fetid journey is one that’s easy to repeatedly take.
Coffin Mulch just want to have good, dirty fun with their music, and I’m right there with them. Spectral Intercession is horribly entertaining, and if you’re a fan of old-school death metal then there’s little to dislike here. Quite the opposite in fact.
Very highly recommended.
