In what was once again a solid month for metal, I give you below my five favourite albums from August…
Let’s start with the melodic technical powerhouse that is Psycroptic’s Divine Council. Fusing fast aggression and emotive potency into terrifyingly effective and addictive death metal songs, I just can’t get enough of this album.
Staying with death metal, I also really enjoyed Carrion Vael’s Abhorrent Obsessions. The band offer a sharp and energetic modern assault, using weaponised melody and surgical technicality. Yep, this hits the spot nicely.
Kicking up a storm in black metal territories last month was Blackbraid with Blackbraid I. A fast and aggressive brand of black metal injected with Native American folk influences and elements, this is simply a great record for fans of the style.
I loved Dawnwalker’s House of Sand. It’s a chillingly malevolent post-metal/progressive rock opus that’s hidden in plain sight beneath a veneer of respectability. With broad scope, exquisite songcraft, and nuanced atmosphere, this is music that offers an immersive experience.
Finally we come to The Endless by Dreadnought. An eclectic blend of progressive, doom, and black metal, this album grew on me like fine wine. It just refused to let me be, and kept drawing me back to its emotive soundscapes.
