This is the debut album from Swiss black metal band Nidelgret.
Trauerlärm comes recommended for fans of Endstille, Fluisteraars, and Wiegedood. It’s 32 minutes in duration, and has intriguing cover art. All of these things mean that Nidelgret are worth checking out. It turns out, expectations are not only met, but exceeded too.
Of course, the actual music is what matters, and Trauerlärm delivers. Nidelgret play modern black metal, heavy on scything aggression and murderous intensity. The songs are dark and abrasive, focusing on brutality and force rather than atmospheric power. The band unleash a furious attack that’s powered by raw rage and withering speed.
Augmented by electronic elements in key places, it’s not a one-dimensional assault on the senses though. Different paces other than lethal blasting are used, especially as the record progresses. Although atmospheric depth is not the main goal of their material, Nidelgret still know how to wield it effectively when they want to. The same can be said of their use of melodic colour too; when it appears, it laces the music with potent toxins. The song I Confess My Death. Make It Quick is a great example of all of this in one compelling package – lethality, atmosphere, and melody, all coming together strongly. There are even moments of catchiness amidst the carnage.
With every listen Trauerlärm reveals more hidden treasures. The sheer hostility of the music is the primary takeaway upon first encountering Nidelgret, but as the layers of abrasive darkness give way to repeated listens, deeper, darker depths and fascinating subtle details begin to emerge. Trauerlärm is striking upon first encounter, but truly unleashes its full potential over time. In this way, it’s an addictive listen.
Trauerlärm offers a visceral take on contemporary extremity that’s hard to put down. This is an album that’s very easy to enjoy if you like your music relentless, harsh, and venomous. However, if you have the resilience to fully embrace the blackened brutality on display, you’ll be rewarded with rare gems of eyewatering value.
Nidelgret’s debut record is an extremely strong one. A revelation in violence.
Very highly recommended for fans of the band’s mentioned previously, as well as acts like Anaal Nathrakh, Funeral Mist, Marduk, This Gift is a Curse, and Ultha.
