This is the fourth album from Scottish death metal band Scordatura.
Featuring the vocalist of Party Cannon in their ranks, Scordatura play brutal death metal, and they play it hard. Across 28 belligerent minutes Led into Oblivion is a record that wants to absolutely destroy everything and leave no trace. It succeeds in this too, very nicely in fact.
Apart from the disappointingly pointless intro, Scordatura don’t mess around. This is no-nonsense brutality, lacking frilly filler. Instead, Led into Oblivion focuses on ripping off faces and breaking bones, as it should do.
The influences are old-school and nasty, all played with energetic lethality. The core of the brutal death metal style is all well and good, but it’s good to hear a band like Scordatura, who also offer something a little more than that of the average band peddling this style. Scordatura blend a few different sounds, while injecting enough of their own personality to bring it all to life.
The band have the intensity of Origin and the twisting technical ferocity of Cryptopsy, but also lean into fierce dynamics not too far removed from those of Dying Fetus and older Job for a Cowboy. This is mixed together with the classic hostility of acts like Cannibal Corpse, Gorgasm, and Severe Torture. A grindcore influence can be felt in places too – think Brutal Truth – adding an occasional feral side to the cold murderous heart of the music.
All in all, it makes for a highly compelling listen. Led into Oblivion is a very enjoyable and satisfying slab of heaviness. It’s really good, and should satisfy any fan of death metal brutality. With well-written songs, relentless aggression, and an undeniably punishing presence, Scordatura have made a strong impression.
Very highly recommended.
