Neckbreakker – Within the Viscera (Review)

Neckbreakker - Within the VisceraThis is the debut album from Danish death metal band Neckbreakker.

Within the Viscera contains 46 minutes of music for fans of pit-friendly heaviness. Neckbreakker’s style is a death metal one that has a healthy dollop of groove metal and hardcore thrown in for good measure, all with the aim of getting people moving. It works too.

Basically, this is influenced by classic death metal, (the Swedish and Floridian varieties in particular, but not exclusively), that’s learned a trick or ten from the likes of Machine Head, Lamb of God, and Pantera. Within the Viscera feels like a 90s album in so many ways.

Within the Viscera offers an onslaught of groove-based aggression. The songs are well-written and have a lot of dynamic energy, making for songs that are infectious. There are hooks flying everywhere as the band unleash rolling heaviness and murderous riffs. Speaking of the latter – Neckbreakker have a talent for riffs. Within the Viscera is packed with the things, great big slabs of distortion that insist upon themselves with their crushing heaviness and energetic groove. There are enough bursts of blast beats and layered melodic enhancements to tie the entire thing together, so that the album avoids becoming boring. Obviously all of the songs are ultimately cut from the same cloth, but the songwriting and performances are strong enough to hold the listener’s attention throughout.

Clearly designed with the live environment chiefly in mind, Within the Viscera delivers a punishing collection of tracks. Neckbreakker’s music is easily enjoyable, and this is definitely a record to be added to the gym playlist.

For fans of Decapitated, Power Trip, 200 Stab Wounds, Konkhra, Malevolence, Undeath, Obituary, etc.
