Borders – Bloom Season (Review)

Borders - Bloom SeasonBorders are a modern metal band from the UK. This is their second album.

Borders impressed with their 2017 EP Diagnosed, which they followed up with the enjoyable Purify in 2019. Now the band are back with 31 minutes of new material on Bloom Season, and they sound bigger and more ambitious than ever.

Borders’ modern metal is a contemporary hybrid mix of metalcore, hardcore, alternative metal, djent, nu-metal, hip hop, electronica, and techno. Bloom Season sees the band combine these various elements into a convincing slab of dynamic energetic heaviness. If you smash together bands such as Hacktivist, Dub War, Aviana, (hed) pe, Alpha Wolf, Limp Bizkit, Landmvrks, and Korn, then you’ll have a rough idea of where Borders are coming from.

The variety of the musical influences is mirrored by the variety of the vocals. It sounds like the band have about three singers, but in fact everything seems to be delivered by just the one.

The songs mix their ingredients well. Brutal heaviness rubs shoulders with techno-laced hip hop. Soaring emotive choruses and deep atmospheric moods segue into crushing downtempo beatdowns. It’s a cocktail that surely won’t be to everyone’s taste, but if you like a diverse and textured array of influences along with your metalcore, then this is for you.

Highly recommended.
