This is the second album from Entropy Created Consciousness, a one-man, (with guests), black metal band.
I’m a big fan of 2018’s Impressions of the Morning Star, so this new release has been greatly anticipated by yours truly. I haven’t been disappointed. This is top tier underground esoteric blackened art.
Antica Memoria di Dis: Acheron & Lethe is an album of two parts, (or two EPs); Acheron and Lethe. Across the full eight tracks we get 43 minutes of modern black metal with doom elements. Other influences can also be heard here and there too, such as ones drawing from the atmospheric, industrial, Gothic, and psychedelic strains of the style. All combined together this makes far a darkly expressive and seductive listen, as the artist’s worldbuilding abilities draw you in and hold you fast, enthralled.
Antica Memoria di Dis: Acheron & Lethe is a notable progression for this project. I like that the artist behind Entropy Created Consciousness draws from the past, but ultimately covers new fertile ground. Despite sharing similar roots and base ingredients, (it was apparently originally recorded in the same year as Impressions of the Morning Star), this new work has been twisted, warped, and morphed into something new, and it possesses a vibrant corruptive influence that belongs to itself alone.
The songs are individually-wrought, yet fashioned into a coherent whole. The level of nuanced detail here is impressive. The structure and content of the music has clearly had much time poured into it, and the results are striking and compelling.
Like the first album Antica Memoria di Dis: Acheron & Lethe requires time invested to truly reap the rewards of its multifaceted depths, but the rewards this time are new and richly conceived. The return of Entropy Created Consciousness is a triumphant one. It shows that Impressions of the Morning Star was no fluke, and I can’t wait for whatever dark delights this artist has in store for us in the future.
Antica Memoria di Dis: Acheron & Lethe is best taken as a full, atmospheric, holistic experience, to really let the immersive malevolence creep into you.
Essential listening.
