Coltsblood – Obscured into Nebulous Dusk (Review)

Coltsblood - Obscured into Nebulous DuskColtsblood are a doom band from the UK and this is their third album.

Following on from 2019’s split with Un, (which I thoroughly enjoyed), it’s great to have a new album from Coltsblood to get to grips with. It’s four songs, 42 minutes of hideous blackened doom nastiness.

The menace is off the charts. Obscured into Nebulous Dusk is dark and full of malevolent intent. The huge songs move with glacial pace, unfolding in grim grandeur as they lay out apocalyptic paths for the listener to follow.

The harrowing music is awash with mournful atmospheres that are full of threat. It’s melancholy mixed with malice, as Coltsblood expertly craft nightmare soundscapes devoid of hope. For someone to explore these terrifying vistas requires them to be made of hardy stuff, as it’s unlikely they’ll emerge unscathed.

The songs take influence from lightless funeral doom, ugly death metal, sorrowful traditional doom, abrasive sludge, and venomous black metal. These strands are woven together into colossal works of despair and devastation; four songs that herald the end times, covered in filth and grime and ripe with infernal promise.

Obscured into Nebulous Dusk is a strong return from Coltsblood. They demonstrate an easy mastery of sickeningly formidable doom metal, and this is an album I’ll be getting crushed by for some time.

Essential listening for fans of bands such as Bell Witch, Chrch, Cult of Occult, Keeper, Lycus, Mizmor, Monads, Mournful Congregation, Old Witch, Spectral Voice, Usnea, etc.
