Earthburner – Permanent Dawn (Review)

Earthburner - Permanent DawnThis is the debut album from US grindcore band Earthburner.

Brought to us by members of The Atlas Moth, Broken Hope, Canyon of the Skull, Gloryhole Guillotine, and Sanguisugabogg, (and featuring guests from Immolation and Napalm Death), Earthburner deliver a fearsome deathgrind assault. Permanent Dawn is 21 minutes of grinding aggression that unexpectedly culminates in a Corrosion of Conformity cover.

Permanent Dawn offers up a meaty platter of old-school deathgrind, and it tastes good. Get it shovelled down your throat in one big gulp now. Imagine a smashing together of Napalm Death, Extreme Noise Terror, Gorerotted, and Brutal Truth, and you’ll have a decent idea of where Permanent Dawn is coming from.

The songs are short and brutal. The band unleash blast beat carnage and fierce speed-driven belligerence, alongside mid-paced chugging heaviness, barbaric riffs, and steamroller groove. The gruesome growls of Sanguisugabogg’s vocalist are backed up by the piercing rasps of Napalm Death’s guitarist. It’s an effective combination.

Earthburner’s deathgrind heaviness is enjoyable and satisfying. The album’s duration makes it easy to simply stick on again once it’s done, and the old-school grindcore template makes for songs that are fun to listen to as you stomp around the living room breaking stuff with impunity.

If this is a style that hits the spot for you, then be sure to check out Permanent Dawn.

Highly recommended.
