This is the second album from US death metallers Coffin Rot.
2018’s Coffin Rot demo promised much, and then 2019’s A Monument to the Dead delivered. Well, it’s been five long years since then – has Dreams of the Disturbed been worth the wait?
Yep! Dreams of the Disturbed boasts 33 minutes of old-school death metal carnage. It’s tasty, easy to digest, and gruesomely good fun.
Since their last records Coffin Rot have picked up an additional guitarist, (also in Decrepisy and Ritual Necromancy), fleshing out their music further. Coffin Rot have expanded their sound along with their lineup, and it seems to have worked nicely for them.
Dreams of the Disturbed is a darker and more malevolent creation than its predecessor, while still retaining a clear family line. It’s heavy, ugly, and nasty, just as we like it. The well-written songs combine influences from a few different death metal eras to produce a timeless blend of death metal that’s simply enjoyable to listen to.
Coffin Rot handle riffs well, and stitch them together into effective songs. The music moves through a mix of faster and slower parts with animated ease, providing blasting aggression and sickening groove that hits the spot. The use of melody is strong, heightening the macabre atmospheres and layering the brutal heaviness with streaks of arterial colour.
Coffin Rot is an easy band to enjoy if you’re a fan of the style. Dreams of the Disturbed is definitely recommended for fans of bands such as Autopsy, Bloodbath, Broken Hope, Cannibal Corpse, Corpsessed, Fulci, Necrot, Undeath, Undergang, etc.
