Evilyn are an international death metal band and this is their debut album.
Evilyn play a form of death metal with strong avant-garde/dissonant leanings. Mondostrunken contains 36 minutes of material, showcasing a band that have honed their vision into an atypical beast.
Containing current/ex-members of Ashen Horde, Malignancy, Norse, Somnium Nox, Thoren, Vihaan, and Virulent Depravity, a lot of skill and experience has gone into Mondostrunken, and it shows. For a rough idea of Eveilyn’s style, think of an unholy mix of Gorguts, Ulcerate, and Morbid Angel.
Evilyn have an avant-garde approach to their music, one that’s richly technical and with an embedded progressive depth. The songs are mysteriously crafted, seeming to rise out of their obscure structuring only after repeated exposure, as if they are reluctant to give up their esoteric secrets.
The music is heavy and twisted, delivering ugly contorted slabs of sinuous death metal. The songs are ripe with dissonant character. Rather than the pure darkness that many dissonant bands go for though, Evilyn have a more unorthodox edge to their music, but one that is still grounded in the sort of malevolent expression that you’d expect from an act of this ilk.
If you have the time, stamina, and patience to endure Mondestrunken‘s dissonant weight then rich rewards await.
