Christ Dismembered – Christ Dismembered (Review)

Christ DismemberedChrist Dismembered are an Australian black metal band and this is their debut album.

With a duration of only 28 minutes, this album goes for the throat big time. Yes, it’s time for some raw second wave black metal, and Christ Dismembered play their brand of misanthropic hatred very well.

The band list some of their major influences as bands such as Gorgoroth, Belphegor, Dark Funeral, Marduk, 1349, and Naglfar, and I can see that; this album is certainly aggressive and nasty enough.

After a very old-school church organ intro, we get seven tracks of furious blackened mayhem. The band have a feral quality to their delivery that’s quite infectious, but are still restrained enough to know how to write a good song. Raw and brutal, this is black metal that takes no prisoners and shows no mercy.

It’s not all high speed blasting either, (although there’s plenty of that), as the band inject some blackened melodies and grim atmospheres into the proceedings here and there for the sake of variety and dynamics.

The singer performs his needle-thin screams with passion and an acidic delivery that sounds quite threatening. There’s also somewhat of a liquid quality to his voice that makes him sound like he’s flowing around the blisteringly aggressive music like a sleek predator.

Everything here works very well indeed, and Christ Dismembered have produced a roaringly enjoyable album.

A highly recommended listen for acolytes of the darkside.
