The songs are raw and rotten, seemingly torn from some long-lost crypt somewhere. This is pretty much as authentic as it gets, and Cist channel the spirit of the early death metal pioneers like it’s the most natural thing in the world.
Cist play their metal with great energy and enthusiasm, and it’s clear that the band have a love for their decaying music. They obviously have some talent too, as these tracks attest to. There’s a spark of something special here, with each of these songs surely capable of igniting any death metal fan’s love of the old-school; unless you’re so completely jaded and saturated by this kind of thing, of course. But, even then, Cist do what they do so damn well that The Frozen Casket should have you banging your head in no time.
So stick this very fine EP on at full volume, and get ready to wonder what the Hell happened to the last 30 years or so.
