Unmerciful – Devouring Darkness (Review)

Unmerciful - Devouring DarknessUnmerciful are a US death metal band and this is their fourth album.

It’s not too often a new Unmerciful album rolls around, but when it does, (2016’s Ravenous Impulse, 2020’s Wrath Encompassed), it’s always a tasty treat of death metal. Devouring Darkness is a 38-minute monster – ten tracks of unrelenting brutality, (which includes an Origin cover).

With a new vocalist in tow, Unmerciful are in fine remorseless form. This sort of no-frills brutality is easily enjoyable, and Unmerciful deal out the punishment without reprieve. There are ex-Origin members in Unmerciful, so they are an obvious reference point, but if you’re a fan of bands such as Cannibal Corpse, Defeated Sanity, Deeds of Flesh, Disavowed, Hate Eternal, Suffocation, etc. then this is for you.

The songs are focused and packed with blunt force brutality. The band balance technical execution with barbaric intensity, resulting in savage songs that smash your bones with inhuman precision and lethal force. It’s fast and ferocious, with no filler, and plenty of crushing riffs and adrenaline-soaked blast beats. What’s not to like?

If you favour your brutal death metal bloodthirsty and direct, then this is for you. Unmerciful are skilled practitioners of the grisly death metal arts, and Devouring Darkness offers a tapestry of punishment for the listener to endure.
