This is the second album from Lust Hag, a solo black metal act from the US.
I didn’t expect a new Lust Hag album so soon after the artist’s first one from last year, but I shouldn’t have been surprised I suppose. After all, since then, she has also released Prayers Unanswered, (a split with Reaping Fields,), and a split with Genital Shame. As a big fan of Lust Hag, the 44-minute Irrevocably Drubbed is very well-received.
Lust Hag’s music excels at melodic ferocity and atmospheric terror. It’s raw black metal, delivered with passion and a talent for songwriting. The spectral atmosphere is deep, and the riffs leave scars. You can hear the second wave influences, but also a contemporary edge that lends the music a vibrant urgency and a blackened death metal bite that’s lethal.
Lust Hag songs have always been well-crafted, but the artist is increasingly strengthening her grip on malevolent riffs, build/release mechanics, engaging structures, vicious dynamics, and atmospheric worldbuilding. Each of the songs on Irrevocably Drubbed allows the music the time to shine with menacing grace, as the artist tears through the record’s duration with zealous aggression. Unfortunately this time there’s an interlude track, but it’s inoffensive enough. Minor misstep aside, Irrevocably Drubbed is Lust Hag firing on all cylinders.
Lust Hag remains one of the very best underground black metal bands that lurk in the abyssal underworld. Hopefully Irrevocably Drubbed can go at least some way towards spreading the Lust Hag gospel further and wider. Don’t miss out on Irrevocably Drubbed.
