Nuclear Tomb – Terror Labyrinthian (Review)

Nuclear Tomb - Terror LabyrinthianNuclear Tomb are a death/thrash metal band from the US and this is their debut album.

Nuclear Tomb play an intriguing mix of death and thrash metal that combines a ferocious attack with progressive wanderings and idiosyncratic layers. Exploding across 33 minutes, Terror Labyrinthian impresses with its ambition, scope, and beating heart of passionate steel.

The music is riff-friendly and powered by a powerful thrash metal engine. The band adopt an atypical approach to their music, fusing old-school technical/progressive death metal components onto a classic thrash chassis, resulting in a lean, mean deathrash machine that isn’t afraid to take an expressive scenic route to get to its destination, despite the relatively brief running time.

One of the things I like about Labyrinthian Terror is that even though its DNA is old, this isn’t a nostalgia trip. Nuclear Tomb take their influences and put them to work, making for an enjoyable collection of tracks. It’s charismatic and satisfying, with the band taking the flesh and bones of the style and fashioning them into their own brand of undead horror.

The music has personality, good ideas, and plenty of hooks to hold the listener’s attention. It’s aggressive, driven by relentlessly good riffs, but also interesting in its ability to throw in some unexpected sounds and musical detours or enhancements. There’s a lot going on here, and Labyrinthian Terror is a well-rounded and engaging experience throughout. It also simply rips the opposition to bloody shreds.

All Hail The Riff! All hail creative songwriting! All hail Nuclear Tomb!
