Cult Burial – Reverie of the Malignant (Review)

Cult Burial - Reverie of the MalignantThis is the second album from Cult Burial, a death/black/doom metal band from the UK.

Following on from 2020’s crushing Cult Burial, Reverie of the Malignant is a 41 minute journey into a world of darkness and despair. It’s not to be missed.

Cult Burial have taken their darkness to new levels of gloom and misery. Their compelling mix of black, death, and doom has manifested as a malevolent collection of tracks that combine harrowing atmosphere, serrated blackened aggression, and deathly might.

Reverie of the Malignant takes Cult Burial’s blackened elements deeper into the music’s heart. Alongside the increased presence of otherworldly melodies and a songwriting approach that emphasises the music’s impact as a whole, this has made for an album of immersive atmosphere and dread mood.

Across this new record Cult Burial’s refined and improved songwriting is apparent. Reverie of the Malignant fuses its influences together in deeper, more meaningful, and more effective ways than its predecessor, (which itself was already quite adept at doing this). You can still identify the component parts, but it’s harder to pinpoint where one ends and another begins. Although certain aspects of the Cult Burial formula are emphasised at different times, all work together in concert to produce an collection of music that’s affecting and immersive.

The new Cult Burial album has impressed me greatly. I liked the band’s debut album a great deal, and have enjoyed watching them develop since they first crawled out of the underground, but Reverie of the Malignant feels like the true realisation of the promise I first heard on their murderously good debut EP Sorrow.

Don’t miss out on this. If you’re a fan of blackened death/doom metal that excels in its atmospheric brutality, then this is one for you.
