Inherits the Void – The Impending Fall of the Stars (Review)

Inherits the Void - The Impending Fall of the StarsThis is the second album from French one-man black metal band Inherits the Void.

Following on from 2021’s Monolith of Light, The Impending Fall of the Stars brings us 43 minutes of mood-rich black metal. Bolstered by additional musicians on drums and piano/keyboards, the artist behind Inherit the Void has crafted an album to fall deeply into.

The Impending Fall of the Stars is a mixture of atmospheric and melodic black metal. It takes influence from the classic Scandinavian scene, while also remaining cognisant of more modern blackened styles. This is in keeping with the music on Monolith of Light, only with a touch more melody used on this new material.

The fast and aggressive Swedish style is augmented by atmospheric and post-blackened influences. These latter aspects soften the music’s edges, making for an album the builds worlds as much as it destroys them. The songs make the most of both of these ingredients to forge music that combines spectral violence with expansive cosmic atmosphere.

If you’re a fan of old-school black metal that’s enriched with contemporary elements, then look no further than The Impending Fall of the Stars.

A recommended listen.
