This is the second album from Irish black/death metallers Coscradh.
Carving the Causeway to the Otherworld is the 44-minute follow up to 2022’s Nahanagan Stadial, and unleashes a monster of black/death metal horror on the world. Coscradh are fierce purveyors of quality extremity, and their new record is a beast.
Carving the Causeway to the Otherworld is an album of ferocious brutality and inhuman vocalisations. It’s a barrage of grim blackened carnage, yet amidst the hostility and outright nastiness of it all you’ll find music that’s more considered and well-rendered than most playing this sort of style.
Coscradh infuse their music with different influences and elements, all designed to bring their malevolent vision to unholy life. There’s a foundation of feral black metal, layered with death metal violence. There is a war metal aspect that’s unhinged and merciless, but also a willingness to explore darkened worldbuilding that allows the band to craft songs that offer more than simple aggression. Laced into all of this is a technicality that provides an edge that many ostensibly similar acts lack.
The music is imbued with a manic fury, an unfettered sonic diatribe one step away from going off the rails in an orgy of bloodshed and destruction. And yet, it never does, as Carving the Causeway to the Otherworld boasts a rare control. Coscradh know exactly when to unleash Hell, exactly when to pull back the reins, and, importantly, how to vary this as they move through the music. In other words, this is a record of constant micro-adjustments between chaos and order. Sometimes it’s more one than the other, but it’s always a well-balanced blend of the two, making for a compelling listen .
This is a worthy dose of venomous black/death metal. If you’re a fan of bands such as Ascended Dead, Black Curse, Malthusian, Portal, Teitanblood, then this is very much for you.
