This is the ninth album from US death metal band Revocation.
Revocation are a band I always enjoy. From 2016’s Great Is Our Sin onwards, (which includes 2018’s The Outer Ones and 2022’s Netherheaven), I’ve devoured each new release hungrily. On their new outing New Gods, New Masters, Revocation return triumphant, with 46 minutes of new material.
On New Gods, New Masters Revocation have a new lineup, (current/ex-bands such as Cognitive, Evilyn, and Obscura), and three guest singers, (from Cattle Decapitation, Gorguts, and Job for a Cowboy).
Yep, it’s another feast of technical extremity and precise brutality from Revocation. The songs are well-crafted, bringing together intricate aggression and serrated hooks. Laced with progressive elements and thrashy riffs that pepper the album at select moments, New Gods, New Masters is an easy album to enjoy if you’re a fan of what Revocation do.
Revocation know their trade well at this point, and put the work in dishing out crushing riffs and molten solos. Both are well-represented on these new songs. I like how the band balance their technical skills with the need to attack directly; it’s well-judged, with the obvious talents of the musicians being unleashed where needed, or stripped back at others to provide straightforward metallic heaviness.
New Gods, New Masters is a strong new album from Revocation. It’s a beast of a record. If you’re a fan of the band’s past few releases, then this is definitely for you. I’d say that despite its obvious instant appeal, it’s best enjoyed over time, as the more you expose yourself to it the better it gets.
Very highly recommended.
