Inculter – Morbid Origin (Review)

Inculter - Morbid OriginInculter are a thrash metal band from Norway and this is their third album.

Many, many, many moons ago thrash metal was one of my favourite genres. However, when compared to other genres these days, thrash just doesn’t hold my attention like it once used to. However, this is where Inculter come in to show people how it’s done. Their classic thrash attack hits the sweet spot between old-school hero worship and contemporary passionate energy.

This is a rough and impassioned interpretation of the early days of thrash. To be honest, I think the promo blurb sums up this record best by saying – “Kreator could have followed up their early works with this epitome of snootiness, or “Schizophrenia“-era Sepultura could have gotten drunk together with “Ride The Lightning“-Metallica and made this record.”

Morbid Origin is packed with the sort of meaty, well-written thrash metal that’s easy to absorb and digest. Despite a superfluous intro and a tad-too-long duration of 48 minutes, Inculter really put their all into this record. Besides, the duration doesn’t really feel as long as it is, and it’s hard to know what I’d really cut, (apart from the intro, obviously).

The songs take the lister on a compelling journey through choice thrash delights. We have roaring fast assaults, mid-paced riff-fests, comprehensive worldbuilding, and the sort of attention to detail, flow, and holistic songcraft that feels exactly in touch with why so many people loved the genre back in the day. The album boasts an obscene amount of classic riffs, and Inculter know how to fashion these into a collection of killer tunes.

Inculter have crafted a compelling exemplar of 80s thrash. Delivered with modern hindsight, cherry picking some of the strongest aspects of the genre, this is an effortlessly enjoyable listen. Inculter have prior form with thrash, but this is surely their most forensic examination of the style to date.

Yep, this is really damn good. If thrash metal is your bag, then this is one that you definitely should get your grubby mitts on.
