Zvylpwkua – The Outlying Entities (Review)

Zvylpwkua - The Outlying EntitiesThis is the second album from international death metal band Zvylpwkua.

Featuring a member of Feral Lord and Slog, The Outlying Entities is an avant-garde death metal monster. Beware those that enter into its sphere of awareness, as this is not an album to approach lightly.

Zvylpwkua specialise in near-impenetrable landscapes of death metal horror. Whatever genre tags you want to throw at this release – dissonant, blackened, experimental, jazz, atmospheric, technical – it absorbs them all into the pitch black miasma that shrouds the material like an inscrutable cloak of corruption.

The Outlying Entities is dark, grim, and foul. It’s a terrifying exploration of how to use death metal materials to build nightmare constructs that exude threat from every malignant pore. Zvylpwkua’s otherworldly dark intensity is harsh, brutal, and utterly merciless, but not in a typical death metal fashion. The Outlying Entities is more unusual and freeform than that, offering a churning, labyrinthine journey for the listener to subject themselves to.

These songs are harrowing and destructive expressions of creative macabre density. They’re absolutely not for the casual extreme metal fan, and instead should only be approached by hardened connoisseurs of the abyssal underworld. If this is you, then let Zvylpwkua devour you whole.
