Thunder Horse – After the Fall (Review)

Thunder Horse - After the FallThis is the third album from US doom metal band Thunder Horse.

After the Fall contains 40 minutes of quality doom. Spliced with elements of classic heavy metal, stoner, and hard rock, alongside splashes of psychedelia and progressive rock, Thunder Horse have crafted an album that’s worth spending some quality time with.

Thunder Horse play their music low and slow, with plenty of character and hooks. The songs are well-written and carry good presence, as the band rip out riff after riff. On the surface of it, this is a good introduction to Thunder Horse’s style, but there’s more than just that here.

After the Fall is an interesting album. Thunder Horse’s vision for heavy music sees them embracing some of the standard stoner doom tropes on the one hand, while on the other finds them including some distinctly non-standard ideas and creative enhancements into their music, which are just great to hear. As such, the album is quite varied, within its stylistic framework, and Thunder Horse mix together a few different influences into their compelling formula. Just some examples include Black Sabbath-vibes, Pink Floyd progressive explorations, a selection of layered vocals, grunge personality, and other colourful inclusions. It’s all wrapped up in a doom metal bow and delivered with skill and character by a band that are clearly interested in doing their own music their own way, as it should be.

After the Fall is a rich and rewarding experience for fans of the classic doom style, with a few bells and whistles that work really well. Thunder Horse have produced a really enjoyable album that has plenty of mileage in it.

Very highly recommended.
