This is the latest release from Miserable Failure, (or MSRBLFLR), a French death metal/grindcore band.
Miserable Failure have surfaced once more to bring us more multifaceted mayhem with this single-track EP. Toska is a 25-minute descent into chaos, and it’s great to experience Miserable Failure’s dark, warped reality once more.
Constructed from the shattered parts of death metal, black metal, and grindcore, these broken fragments are sucked into an abyssal maelstrom where they coalesce into an unfathomable Hell dimension. Richly violent, this track is a brutal exemplar of expressive nightmare. It may technically consist of 14 different movements, (as far as I can tell), but it all flows together with the raging fluidity of a waterfall of rusted blades.
A catalogue of hideous extremity, this release will take you through a range of reactions, from holding your head in your hands in utter horror and despair, to standing and yelling at the speakers “JUST FUCKING GRRIIIIIIINNNNNDDD” in encouragement as the band rip through the sort of riffs that Brutal Truth would be proud of. Honestly, this is devastating stuff. I’ve long thought that Miserable Failure are one of the extreme metal underground’s best kept secrets, but Toska covers this in cement and dumps it in the tar pit with manic confirmatory glee.
As well as the mind-numbing hostility and brutality that you’d expect, Toska also allows Miserable Failure to showcase their atmospheric abilities here and there. This extends beyond the infrequent industrial-tinged noise elements too. Covered in filth and darkness as they may be, there are still mood-based moments dotted around this apocalyptic landscape that enhance the whole.
Miserable Failure, as always, have impressed. Their unexpected assault is always welcome, and as you pick up the pieces of your demolished body, just know that you’re surely glad on what remains of your inside that you have experienced the power and the glory of тоска.
Don’t miss out.
