Heretical Sect – Rapturous Flesh Consumed (Review)

Heretical Sect - Rapturous Flesh ConsumedThis is the debut album from US black metal band Heretical Sect.

Heretical Sect’s sound combines blackened ferocity with doom misery. Specifically, traditional black metal and 90s death/doom. It’s a combination that works well, yielding some gruesome rotten fruit over the course of six grim tracks. Across 36 minutes the band drag the listener on a harrowing journey into the dark past.

These songs marry atmosphere with an aggressive form of darkness that seems very menacing and almost threatening enough to cause physical harm. The band’s funereal dirge approach to music is enhanced by black/death metal savagery that lends it real teeth.

There are some very evocative guitars on this album. Cruel melodies and ghastly riffs abound. The album is replete with the sort of guitars that catch your ear, only to then rip it off. Sometimes the guitars are fast and sharpened to a blackened edge, while at others they are crushingly slow and ominous.

The vocals are notable for their variety, inhumanity, and passionate delivery. Resisting the urge to be any one thing for too long, while always remaining consistent with the band’s mission statement, the singer’s performance is very good indeed.

Rapturous Flesh Consumed is a sinister, malignant work that wants nothing more than to rub your face in the horror. Let it; it’s worth the nightmares.

Very highly recommended.
