De Profundis – The Gospel of Rot (Review)

De Profundis - The Gospel of RotDe Profundis are a death metal band from the UK and this is their latest EP.

I have a lot of time for De Profundis. If you haven’t already, check out 2014’s Frequencies, 2015’s Kingdom of the Blind, 2018’s The Blinding Light of Faith, and 2022’s The Corruption of Virtue. All are well-worth your time. The band are now back with The Gospel of Rot, which brings us four tracks across 17-minutes, as well as a new bassist and singer.

I: Corruption opens fast and thrashy. The new singer has a strong voice, handling harsh growls and serrated screams with ease. It’s a thrash-edged classic death metal assault, much less progressive than some of the band’s work, with a contemporary bite that works well. The leads and solos are damn fine too.

II: Deception is next, assaulting the listener with death metal that’s simultaneously old and new. De Profundis channel modern death metal vitality by way of old-school death metal songwriting chops. The results speak for themselves. Like its predecessor , there’s aggression and brutality, but also engaging leads, memorable riffs, and compelling atmosphere. The singer continues to impress with his powerful voice.

After this we come to III: Indoctrination, which twists and writhes with brutal precision and sharp bright melodic colour. It’s energetic and lethal, and the vocals once again showcase the new singer’s able talents. Both his growls and screams sound great, and when they’re layered together, they deliver monstrous impact.

The final song – IV: Subtraction – is a Sepultura cover, which De Profundis deal with a brutally direct manner. It captures the original song well, while also putting the band’s own stamp on it. Once again, the new singer stands out with his ferocious vocal delivery.

The Gospel of Rot bodes very well for the future of De Profundis. I look forward to what they do next. Make sure you get well-acquainted with this tasty new EP.
