Insanity Cult are a black metal band from Greece and this is their fourth album.
New Insanity Cult is always worth taking time out of your busy day to explore. Κάθοδος, (or Kathodos), contains 37 minutes of material for us to experience, and is their shortest and most caustic record yet.
If you’re unfamiliar with the band, they boast members of Isolert and Sørgelig in their ranks, and have been producing quality black metal for over a decade, (check out As My End Unfolds and Towards the Great Dissolution as just a couple of examples).
Κάθοδος is an album of raw second wave black metal terror pressed into the service of sprawling nightmarescapes. With melancholic layers and a focus on atmospheric depth alongside frozen aggression, Κάθοδος showcases Insanity Cult at their most expressive and unhinged.
The band’s black metal is harsh and unforgiving, yet also melodic and atmosphere-rich. The album has a few different things pulled screaming from various underworlds, making for a warped and textured release that’s resolutely not for everyone. Insanity Cult have dug deep of their corrupted creative wellspring, and have unleashed a torrent of darkness.
The agonised vocals spew anguished pain from a place of pure abrasive malevolence, while the music flows in and out of dimensions at will. Ranging from cold distorted malice to the emptiness of grim ambience and introspective self-loathing, Κάθοδος drags the listener though a tormented journey that’s as harrowing as it is cruel. Subjected to inhuman punishment, from enduring blasting hatred to being forced to wander sparse and lightless voids, it’s a wonder anyone who visits the shores of Κάθοδος leaves with their mind intact.
The latest incarnation of Insanity Cult is a terrifying entity of malefic intent. It’s not for the uninitiated, nor is it for casual listening. Κάθοδος is a record for the night, for diving into despair and endless hunger, as the world burns forever.
