Celestial Scourge – Observers of the Inevitable (Review)

Celestial Scourge - Observers of the InevitableCelestial Scourge are a Norwegian death metal band and this is their debut album.

Featuring members of Blood Red Throne and Deception, Celestial Scourge are here to destroy. Observers of the Inevitable contains 30 minutes of brutal technical death metal, and it’s a raging mass of controlled savagery.

The promo blurb mentions Deeds of Flesh, Beyond Creation, Suffocation, The Faceless, The Zenith Passage, Cattle Decapitation, and Cannibal Corpse, which should put you in the right mindset for approaching Observers of the Inevitable. Essentially, Celestial Scourge take strengths from the timeless, classic style and fuse them with a modern death metal delivery.

Celestial Scourge’s technicality may be lethal, but it’s also surprisingly evocative in places. Amidst the brutality you’ll occasionally find cosmic atmosphere and progressive flair, allowing the band a fair degree of range across their material when they want to use it. Of course, this is ultimately a monstrously brutal affair, but Celestial Scourge don’t always limit themselves to pure barbarity. This goes back to the reference points mentioned above – a classic brutality and merciless technical precision form the album’s foundation, but it’s peppered with ideas that also showcase a contemporary talent for worldbuilding. The album also has its fair share of murderous riffs!

Observers of the Inevitable is a very satisfying album to listen to. The style is familiar enough to be easily absorbed if you’re a hardened death metal fan, yet Celestial Scourge have a lot of skill, and their personality shines through in the music enough to make Observers of the Inevitable worth returning to.

Strong, quality stuff. I really enjoyed this. Fans of death metal old and new would do well to make sure they spend some time being smashed around by Observers of the Inevitable.

Very highly recommended.
